help me decide on hood or not 1 Attachment(s) I wanna add a scoop to the top of my 4 inch cowl hood to let cool air in. I added a photo to show u if I should do it. will be on 84 camaro Attachment 325174 |
Re: help me decide on hood or not this is my car currently https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...a29dd13d71.jpg |
Re: help me decide on hood or not Leave it alone. Cowl scoop hood's purpose already is to let cooler air underneath for the air cleaner to draw in. With cowl and the radiator both drawing air in the last thing you need is to pull even more air underneath. For you the name of the game should be sealing off the air cleaner from hot under hood air to the cowl and vent the hot air from the hood through louvers or some other such device. Plus, scoops on top of scoops just looks bad. |
Re: help me decide on hood or not I agree with SC. The cowl hood, especially at 4" tall, is visually very impactful. Adding a scoop into a scoop would just make it all too busy. I recall seeing a 3rd gen in Jackson that had this hood and thinking it was just too much. http://www.speednik.com/files/2013/0...62117352_n.jpg Perhaps you could get some additional air movement from some subtle louvers on either side of the cowl? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Louver-Panel...-/191625526022 Your Camaro is so clean i would hate to see that lost and end up looking like the hood on that Monte Carlo. |
Re: help me decide on hood or not I built a custom air cleaner for my hood, same as yours, so when its shut it is sealed and sucks air from the vents in the hood. Works awesome! took some time to get it to look nice. I will post a pic if I can find |

I thought of the vents but install them in the front of the cowl hood |
Re: help me decide on hood or not Will do. Cant find a pic so have to snap one next time im at the shop. Its off the car due to car getting painted. The hardest part was figuring out how tall/hood clearances. Is your hood a 4" harwood fiberglass? I called them and they said that in a wind tunnel that the wind goes up the cowl and curls down, bounces off windshield and towards the vents in hood. so the vents are/can be functional. When I had mine all dialed in,and was totally sealed, air was seriously flowing through the vents, tho I never had any restriction problems. Never had any leaves or junk get up against them neither. Sure would hold a piece of paper up tight tho. -Dan |
Re: help me decide on hood or not 4" glasstek open on backside with no vents |
Re: help me decide on hood or not putting a goofy looking scoop into the front of it would just add drag and make it look like it belongs in a Japanese cartoon... the original purpose of the cowl induction hood was to get cool, high pressure air from the base of the windshield into the carburetors on the 69 Z/28 Trans Am race cars without creating a lot of extra drag- it was designed by some of the best aero guys at GM and proven in the wind tunnel and on the race track. but you need to seal things up so that the scoop is isolated from the air that is under the hood or it will do nothing but let air pile up in the engine bay, which creates drag and front end lift while also potentially killing off airflow thru the radiator, which leads to overheating... here is a factory crossram Z/28 with the air cleaner base that seals up to the cowl induction hood, which is pretty close to what the actual race cars had: http://www.thelingenfeltercollection...302_Z28_12.jpg |
Re: help me decide on hood or not 1 Attachment(s) i agree, it would look ugly. heres a prototype air-pan i made. i've been meaning to re-make it one day. but it actually works good. might give you some ideas? Attachment 325117 |

Re: help me decide on hood or not its raining here now. i can check later, but im pretty sure i made it 18" wide. i was running a 14x4 filter but just switched to a 14x3 cause i added a plate kit. i only have a 2" cowl. IIRC, the hardest part was making sure it cleared the HEI, but it wasnt that bad. been meaning to copy it and tig weld a nice one. nice car BTW!!! |
Re: help me decide on hood or not thanks! been a lot of work into that car. its changed a little since photo but nothing drastic |
Re: help me decide on hood or not yes, mines 18" wide. i sorta copyied this design. shoulda just bought one? probably ought to make it to fit your hood, with a good seal. i sliced some old vacuum or fuel line to seal it after careful trimming. but this was a good option: http://www.prosystemsracing.com/cata...92/5233103.htm |
