Having troubles installing a 4th gen console.
 

I’ve been working on my first car a 1986 Trans Am with an auto trans. And I’m trying to install a 4th gen console and I’m running into some problems. The console is out of a 2000 Trans Am that was a t56 manual. But it seems to be to far to the right and no far enough forward. I can’t ever get the shifter plate to go on. Does anyone have any ideas or tips for me?

It does overhang on the passenger side. The 4th gen console is too wide.
I remember cutting out a brace on the front of the console to make it stuff in deep enough under the radio pod.

I have a 4th gen T/A console on a shelf in my garage that I bought probably 20 years ago. I'm back to the stock console and it looks so much nicer.

Those looks like pretty comfy seats by the way.

There is a fantastic thread somewhere on this site that explains everything, plus all the various consoles and what fits and what doesn't. It's an ancient thread probably over 20 years old so give me a few hours to find it.

I have the console from the earlier LT1 cars, you have the console from the later LS1 cars. The original console bolts to a bracket that stands up off the trans tunnel, located just under radio pod. The 4th gen console won't clear that bracket. You have to cut material from the bottom front of the console so it fits over the hump and clears the bracket.

I'd take a picture for you but my console is on a top shelf at ceiling height and the front of the console is facing the wall. Gobs of stuff in the way and can't just snap a picture.
