To all those wondering how the fourth gen consoles compare to the 3rd gen console

I called TA Creations USA the other day and ordered a console, but was unsure about the fit. The guy there was VERY helpful and even took some pictures for me. Here's the real kicker...the computer at TA Creations USA is having problems, so he took the time to take the camera home and email the pics to me...by the end of the day (and I called at 5 )

The pics show the 97+, the standard console, and the 93-96. They are ALL Firebird consoles. The 93-96 camaro console is different and is not a direct bolt in, nor does it look pretty when installed.

Enjoy.

Great job getting the info. I completely believe in one picture is worth a thousand words. Another photo to add to my "comparisons" file.

When you say the 93-96 camaro console is not a direct bolt-in, do you mean into firebirds only or camaros too? Is the 97 firebird console a direct bolt-in in a camaro? After seeing so many people doing the swap and posting pics, seeing how great it looks I might do this myself. It seems like only the firebird guys are doing it though.

The 93-96 Camaro Console has a stupid cassette holder at teh front of the COnsole that would be EXACTLY where the radio/AC pod would be...You would have to cut it to put one in...

ok, i'm probably just hard headed, but i really want a 4th gen console in my '91 camaro. now, the 4th gen camaro consoles don't bolt right in, but the 4th gen firebird consoles do? so are you able to put a 4th gen firebird console into a 3rd gen camaro, no problem?

The Radio pod on all 3rd gen Camaros is attached to the center console...So, if you want a 4th gen console, you have to do something about that...EIther dremel(the cheap way) or making a 3rdgen Firebird pod bolt up...That's all you can do AFAIK...

The 3rd gen firebird console is two pieces - the console and the radiopod. The 3rd gen camaro console is one piece. If you want to do the swap, you would probably have to take a 3rd gen radio pod from a firebird and use a 4th gen console.

So, have the pictures helped anyone?

Now here's the question, eyecandy said it best you'll need a firebird radio pod. Now how hard is it to find a firebird radio pod that is BLACK and will it actually fit where the camaro radio pod was. Someone who owns both a camaro and a bird should be able to tell us and finally solve whether or not camaros can have a 4th gen console!! (and cupholders)

I don't have access to a camaro to see where the bolts go into the dash, so I can't help there. I do know that the radio pod can be painted with interior paint (I've painted mine) and that it is held on by 2-3 10mm (I think) bolts above the hvac controls.

As far as the shifter goes, you would have to make a new piece out of fiberglass and it might end up looking like a hack job.

The fourth gens don't have radio pods. The radios and hvac controls are built into the dash. The only thing similar to a radio pod that the 4th gen has is the cassette holder on the 93-96 camaro console...and it's too small to replace the radio pod.

One other problem with Camaro conversion. Isn't the radio pod also integrated into the dash? It may not be one piece, but it looks like it. The Firebird piece would look out of place. To match up, you're talking swapping the entire dash.

3.1, You say that you ordered one of the consoles. Which one did you get and what was the cost? Also I see that they don't have the lid on any of them, is this extra?

Those are helpful pics. The guy at TA Creations really went out of his way to do that. That's a big plus in my book.

Big plus in my book as well. I ordered a 97+ console. But I haven't got the console in yet...

Other guys have fit it in without any problems so I don't foresee any for me.

The console was COMPLETE for $100 (the 97+). The 93-96 firebird console COMPLETE is $80. Great prices.

If anybody who's put this console in before is reading...how did you modify the console to get the front passenger cupholder to come out? I read in a post a while back that it was too tight and scratched all the time. Any suggestions?

It looks a lil different now, the ashtray is gone and window switches are in there now.

I read the same post about the cup holder, but mine is fine, no problems at all!

What is the web site for T/A Creations? One other question, does the lid that goes on the console come with it or is it an additional purchase? Thanks 3.1........

Thanks for the words of hop 86fyr. I love your car. What kind of plastic/where did you get it for the switches?

War_Eagle: The website is: http://www.tacreationsusa.com

If you go to http://www.tacreations.com they make handbags or something...lol

86fyr: What did you do about the cubby hole thing in the front? Also, did you move your shifter over at all? It looks like a VERY clean install and the best picture I've ever seen of it lining up properly.

HM Murdock: In the old new console, I used plexi glass painted on the backside and epoxy to hold it in. It didn't look how I wanted it, so I'm still wondering exactly what other people have used.

In pics it will look the same, in person my paint will look better, GM's color is basically the same all the time, mine has more metallics and pearls in it so it changes, but that will looks sweet, your interior has me beat though, I just did seats and console.

what engine work you have done?

72BuickGSX,

I looked at your webiste and like what 86FyrBrd had asked, what did you do about the heater vents and controls?......Did you wind up making your own ducting or where you able to use the ducting out of the 4th gen ...and so on and so on........

I know it was not fun at all it you are right it does tka epatience. I did swap in my 89 Convertible using the 90-92 dash.

For those wondering about the how the 4th gen console looks in a Camaro there is somewhere a picture of a Red 3 Rd gen convertible that the 4th gen dash in it. I will try to find it in my picture archives if no one can find it.

I've been emailing T/A creations for more information about these consoles and they told me that the 97+ console is NOT a direct bolt in. There exact words were "it has to be hacked" to fit, due to it being taller than the original, or it would not clear the radio box. Does anyone who has used this same console, have any other information on this "hacking" that needs to be done? Feel free to email them and ask them if these are direct bolt in and see what they tell you, because I didn't want something cut or hacked up.............

Mine bolted rite in, there are liek 3 bolts, one is up by the shifter and I had to leave that out, but the rest went rite in and it is held in tight.

Hey 86, what did you do with the cubby hole in the front? Did you move the shifter over any?

War_Eagle, they told me it'd be a hack too. It looks like it fit in 86fybrd's car though. They probably told you that the 93-96 is a MORE direct bolt in and that you'd have to find a place to fit switches. I got the console because its A)new, B)different and C)doesn't have the fold back type lid like the 93-96 which breaks really easy.

I'm not sure why TACreations is saying that. They have seen mine installed in person and that seemed to convince them that they fit no problem.

My next trip down there I'll have to chat with them a little about what is actually required to make it fit well and it's not that difficult.

No 3.1, I think I know what they told me, and I never mentioned the 93-96 model as I am not interested in them. There exact words were the 97+ console was NOT a direct bolt in and had to be hacked to fit. What I am asking is does anyone here have the 97+ console installed in a third generation firebird/trans am? Also you say one of the reasons you want the 97+ is that it is new? Do you mean new to you as these are all used parts. Has anyone made this exact swap? if so any pictures would help out alot, thanks.......
