15 minute seat belt trim fix

I stole this idea from someone on here, but I thought I would share how I did it.

All the tabs were broken off the trim that covers the retractor in the roof. So both trim pieces were flopping around and getting in the way.

Since I didn't want to cut them off or cut new ones to put them on I decided to just screw the trim to the roof.

There is a small hole in the retractor assembly in the roof that looked like a perfect place for a screw.

But I figured aligning the trim properly would be the hardest part. Until I saw this little dot in just the right spot. Like GM had thought about adding a screw in some situations.

So I used that hole as a guide and drilled a small hole for a small screw.

Once you have a hole, line up the trim properly and screw it in. The screw is behind the belt so you don't see it. A black screw would be even better, I just had these lying around.

Voila! No more floppy trim!

I hope this helps someone else with this issue.

Great idea! What size bit and self tapping screw did you use?

That IS a cool little fix. Mine pop out every few weeks. I pop 'em back in but a permanent solution wouldn't hurt. ....and it wouldn't take much to dab some colored paint on that screw either.

The replacement ones have a split in them, you just cut off the old one and slip the new one on. You don't have to cut the new ones. Though the screw solution is much cheaper if the trim looks good and is just missing the clips... much better than having them flop around. If you paint to match it probably looks better than the replacement part anyways.

Great fix! I did the same thing last August on my car. I had some extra OE self-tapping interior trim screws laying around so that is what I used. Drilled the small hole, then beveled it slightly to let the screw recess into the plastic just like the other trim pieces do.

Looks to me to be a number 8 screw, which takes an 1/8th inch bit. Great idea!
