92 GTA - Ls9, ZR1 conversion swap
 

In a turn of events I sold off the GTM project I was working on and bought back the 92 GTA I had done an Ls swap on a few years ago for a redemption build.

I ripped the drivetrain out and sold most of it. Stock Ls1 is going into my 01 camaro which had a 408 I just sold. Ls7 sitting here from the 06 z06 will get sold unless I just store it for a later project. Just gathering parts now and trying to clean out the other cars around here.

This borders on insanity but alot more fun then writing a cheque for a Z.

I think I'm going to use the ls7 I have over selling and buying an ls9.

Did a 408 swap inside a couple days. Wouldn't start due to vats flag and probably gonna snow soon.

I have everything I need to get started, just in the us getting some of the parts.

an LS9 would be a crazy thing to see under a 3rd gen hood, but the price tag is nuts. if you've already got the LS7, you can always add a blower to it for a heck of a lot less. either way, I'm in for pics :)

Is that the car that had chrome Y2K Corvette wheels a while back? I remember seeing pictures of a blue 91/92 bird with an LS1 swap that was done REALLY clean and I drooled over it when I was thinking about doing my LS swap. :)

You know what. I'm realllly sick of others on this board with more bigger and better ideas with these LSX engines in our cars. LOL Everybodys making me jealus and trying to keep up with you guys isnt easy. I said when my car was done, Wow I'm not touching it now. Yea right..... a few months later and i'm checking out Maggys and more bada$$ H/C swaps LOL

I know the feeling. My first swap was a stock 5.3 for the simple job of replacing the reliable but worn out LO3 to serve DD duty for another couple hundred thousand miles

Now with a supercharged 6.0, I believe I have a problem :lol:

Correct I bought this car back in like 05, did the first ls swap. I had sold it at the time as I had no garage and was kinda defeated at the time. Having to drive 6 hours to work on a car was a bitch too.

Fast forward 6 years it's been thru 2 of my friends and I recently bought it back from razor. I had it as a heads and cam car and wasn't a big fan of that and put it back to stock ls1 . Razor then later added an afr top end and fast intake. All has been demolished now. In 6 years from this first GTA I've done about 10 ls swaps, this will be the one I plan to build as close to show quality as I can and the last.

The speartech car is a ls1 bottom/ls3 heads/ls9 top end. Bad *** but not a true ls9.

If im not happy with the ls7 I can add a eforce after it's running. By 2013 I think the zr1s will be pretty low and what I will be saving for.

I'm as north as you can reasonably get, fort mcmurray, Alberta.

i almost opted the Ls9, my father had one at his dealership with lower end issues, could have gotten it cheap, like 1Kish, all was fine until i found out it was gonna cost 2 Grand to rebuild the bottom end. Good luck with the build, should be a "quick" 3rd gen.

3k into a 20k engine and you passed, I'm sure there's more to that otherwise you made a pretty bad decision. I'd fly down and walk that engine home for that price.

well when its the beginning stages of a swap and you have a $5k budget, 2K added on immediately doesnt always sway people right into a engine that needs a rebuild.

Unless you got some real proof please move on and dont clutter this up. Buy it for 3k and sell it for 15 and look at ur budget now. Top end on the engine is worth 10 alone. Rods are worth more then your budget. I'm sure GM would let a bad ls9 go out the back door on a warranty issue as well. :rolleyes:

I'll post some pics once I get the clutter sorted out, just got back from a 4k mile trip and got stuff all over.

Proof? Tom in Parts at colonial west chevrolet in Fitchburg MA, my father, has worked for GM for over 25 years. 100's of GM warranty engines have "gone out the back door".

Found someone did vintage air and an isis system so takes away some of the guess work and a cleaner engine bay.

Ordered the gauges. 4 custom gauges x 4" to fit into the stock panel

Looking for the motivation to strip the front down this weekend.

the plasma and the mig welder are two of my favorite additions to my garage. i also recommend a good 3/8's cordless impact and a big air compressor.

Not much progress on the car, all the parts ordered, need to pick them up at the border at christmas. With this isis wiring system I have ordered for the GTA is going to cut down alot of the wiring and switches.

At work I've been working on a new project for the site infrastructure at work and to learn the program a bit more I thought I'd take a shot at using it to do modeling for the GTA.

This product is primarily for data centers, servers and contents but can let you do any connections so thought why not kill a day. I can use it when the wiring is completed to have it for an as-built when its all done too and I add in all the multipack connectors. Essentially you model items, everything is cubic, you define cable routing and then you connect various items.

The benefit is I can report and trace any of the components and wiring. When I get to the LS7 I'll probably do something similar and put in in this model to figure out that wiring.

Got the new gauges, mocked them up and they fit pretty good in the holes. Need to find blanking plate for the defrost and stereo and hatch button.

Also got half the stuff needed for the wiring setup.

Thanks, the brand is speedhut. I hate fighting to get the stock gauges goin with LS swaps but wanted something stock looking. The speedo is GPS as well with the turn and high beams built in. I'll only have one light for service engine and that should take care of that.

I got lucky that they just started making the dual gauges and I had them do a top/bottom apposed to the common left/right orientation that they have.

That ISIS system is going to be a really cool setup. With the programmability of the system, it looks like you should be able to control everything within the vehicle, except for the essential engine functions required by the PCM, correct? Will it use remote IO over data links for lights and windows?

Does that data center software also give you a wire and interconnection point schedule too? Sounds like a great way to create your schematics prior to completing all the wiring. I have been as-building through-out my build, but to have it all the wiring defined up front would have saved endless amounts of time.

Looking forward to seeing this build come together, provide lots of info if you have time. I was really looking forward to your IROC build before you decided to abandon it. It was looking great from your build pics :confused:

The iroc was neat but I rushed it.. The paint didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it too and the 20s were too much. The main problem was the paint was metallic and painting panel by panel made it different shades. My other paint jobs have turned out alright since then not taking the whole car apart. I have a 92Z project with the 11 year old starting next year to try and do a little resto on that with more paint too. The shitty hawks repro weatherstripping and door felts barely let the window open or which sucked (whatever brand they sell is ****). With the GTA I dont care if it takes 3 years and have to track down all OEM parts. I'll try and keep better updates too.

With that program you can create workflows that would let you step it thru esentially, like install module a, hook wire on point 19 in the module to point a on the rear light. As you complete those workflows it would draw modules and connections onto the screen. For schematics I can drag all the modules and items into a dashboard and it will create connections. Its not as ideal as like cad because you can control the lines in cad but its not really meant to do schematics as I can zoom around in 3d and trace connections on any module as needed.

Correct there are no requirements for the pcm to use the isis. It takes mainly 12v and ground to work of which I will be using painless 7 circuit. The isis security will control the 12v output for ignition to turn it all on thou.

There is a seperate module I am using for the windows and headlight motors and door locks for a total of 4 main modules. One is primarily for grounded inputs, the others are for controlled 12v outputs, the last controls 5 motors with reverse polarity. For the mirrors it will be thru the stock switch, didnt make much sense to not use that as another module was expensive. Everything else will be controlled via touch screen or a ipod. I don't plan to have switches beside door locks, mirrors, signals and high beam/low beam. Everything else will be controlled in the center screen or via the phone. I'll probably have a FM modulator/mp3 player and a small amp to play music. The isis system can also have stuff like 5v inputs to monitor as well if needed.

I sold my 08 z06 a couple years back and have just been playin with those funds, not a huge sum compared to some peoples rigs out there. Alot has been trading stuff here and there too. It probably costs 30% more to do stuff up here in canada. Each time I go to the border to pick up parts im looking at a 30 hour trip :lmao:

WOW... I really wish those gauges were available back when I was in the market!!! Ive seen speedhut's gauges before, and really like the customization options as well as the GPS feature. Not that programming the autometer is difficult, but thats just cool.

I have a mint dash bezel laying around that I was going to try to sell. But I might just keep it around now in case I get ansty and want to re-vamp... Those dual gauges are just too friggin cool.

Did you wire up backlighting at all yet? Just curious how they light up/look...

I did have to request the gauge change, was only like 10 bux. I haven't lit them up yet but there should be a lot on YouTube.

I have started a second project too, more of a driver since the GTA will be more show.

It's an 08 coupe 3lt with most options. Doing the front zr1, widebody, carbon fiber pieces and 19/20s. It's an auto but still pretty sharp in white.
