1984 Trans AM Build Thread It seems like every year I am chasing rust, removing way too much stock body and welding in new plates on my 84 TA not mention it has other issues. The paint was a gift from the previous owner not only was it not clear coated but the paint is too hard and it cracked everywhere. It also is hiding some sweet bondo bodywork. The car has been running so good I decided to pull the trigger on a new body that I will have it painted and swap everything over. I found this roller that was super clean underneath except where someone jacked it up by the fender mount. It is an 84 L69 just like mine so I am hoping most of the stuff I have bolts right in. My friend does high end restorations and said he would help me with the body work epoxy coating and paint if I get it prepped for him. I am going to strip it down over the next couple months and collect parts then after winter when he has room I will get it painted and swapped with my current 350, T5 and rear. The chassis is mostly unmolested with the harness intact and it is solid which is a treat in the north east. I will make this my build thread https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...6d06403236.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...593549bf9a.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...5b607f617a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...af27ff5ae8.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...d048504571.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...0199c184cb.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...e3c3dcdc51.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...ce135b1386.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project That is a great car to switch your powertrain into, in the northeast there is nothing better than a clean body. Those early third gen TAs also look amazing in black and gold. |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Solid body. Will be killer fixed up painted and with your powertrain in it |
Re: My new 1984 TA project I'm following. Mine is red/silver and in about the same shape. Well, maybe a little better. |
Re: My new 1984 TA project I currently have a riveted cowl to a steel Hood but I wanted something a little nicer for this project so I picked up this hardwood bolt on 2-in cowl today got a great deal on Craigslist. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...381bc080a0.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...668b352c70.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Been a while since my last update supply chain issues have slowed down the shop I am going to but we are just a couple months away. Parts collection has been underway all winter and sitting in my basement I have an *** load of parts to rebuild the front end, add sub frame connectors, hard and soft brake lines, bearings hoses and other rubber bits an AC compressor among other interior upgrades like new carpet and seat covers. So the project is not forgotten just slowed down. |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Another update, back seats are recovered. Going to go after the fronts next https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...fb3ffe5427.jpg |

Re: My new 1984 TA project Hawks sells that two-tone fabric. It’s not an exact match to the original but it’s all that’s available. They’re the walnut & sandstone set at the links below. I think the original seats had 7 pleats. https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-...ment-6-pleats/ https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-...ment-7-pleats/ |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Hi seats were solid brown, and he was holding out for some new old stock to get original material. But thank you for sharing that. Wish that material was reproduced. |

Re: My new 1984 TA project Shop is open and I am finally getting to work. I got the new fender and hood fitted and I have started prepping the underside I am blown away how clean it is underneath and how unmolested the body is prepping for subframe connectors now. All the clips and brackets are still installed a few pics of progress. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2827723a40.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...f851dadd7d.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...0a58cb0912.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project just realized this is a car i owned for a few years. LOL. i bought it in PA for parts years ago, but was too nice to take apart. i ended up using it as a reference to put my other two 1984 Trans Ams back together and then sold it last year to a local kid. glad to see it's still local and someone is restoring it. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...b456a6d23.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...adb04bbf8.jpeg |

That is awesome. When I have it done next spring we should get together and you can check it out. |
Re: My new 1984 TA project that would be awesome - let me know! i "should" have my custom '84 TA on the road next spring (fingers crossed). |

Re: My new 1984 TA project Great reference pics! Do you know what this extra hole is used for? https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2562d65c10.png |
Re: My new 1984 TA project That hole is for the screw that holds the trim on. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...c82aef1ea.jpeg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Picture dump incomingI had a good night tonight got the second blocking done on high build with indicator basically a black powder that lets you know if you have any low spots. This is definitely going to be the nicest car I own when it's done. I also got the spoiler and the bumpers prepped https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...99fb353607.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...95ec037382.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...7535bea1e6.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...8fb7d1fd42.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2dfd6041b2.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...0b1da66332.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2cbfafc6f8.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...47f7ce67b3.jpg |

Super pleased with how clean the frame rails are in the front https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...4cb0382995.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...bd237776db.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...724c27ba5e.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Painting until 130am but looks great. Paint, looks more blue like the hot wheels in person the booth lights washed out my camera. The metallic / Pearl come though nice. Sealed with epoxy, 3 coats Omni from ppg and 2 high solids clear. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...bc2177d15f.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...765ec7b7b2.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...d05d7c1d8e.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...45d4c10f3a.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...50f05349d0.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...c5f60911f0.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...638f2eabb4.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...53354bbd64.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...953f7abd4c.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project I really like that color. Can’t wait to see a pic of the car together in the sunlight. |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Few more pictures got the engine out of the old one. Clean up and pull the rest of the 5 speed stuff. Also a paint sample and por15 coated suspension parts https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2ef9afc9e7.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...47e85208ee.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...0d07c9bd9b.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...df51bb2098.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...d9d9e5e35d.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project More progress, I finished the holes for the shifter and clutch master. My friend saved the factory bracing on the shifter and cut the hole to be factory accurate then made me a new brace before we tacked it in. Super happy with getting this done. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...ac1eeabff1.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...23697d0eb4.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...bf5f271cb1.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...68c1e0ee17.jpg |

Re: My new 1984 TA project One more worry ball out of the way. Opened up the tank so I could put my sniper pickup inside of it and I am super pleased how clean it is for a factory tank on a 38-year-old car https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...c3f9ee48ba.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...68c35f6c84.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...90e15b8155.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project The paint was Duplicolor Engine Paint With Ceramic, Pontiac Blue (12 oz.) DE1610. I got it from Napa same with the primer |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Man that tank is CLEAN! I can only hope that mine looks half that good when I open it up. |
Re: My new 1984 TA project I dyed the old map pocket in the corner to match the brand new door panel pretty happy with how it came out https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...6d5ce94b89.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Got new valve covers to clear the heater box. The Edelbrock were too tall. Then I got the master cylinder, valve and booster mocked up with new brake lines so I know they all fit. I got the dash in and everything that goes though the firewall including sniper wires. I am also going to try to get cruise working. I swapped in the rear end from my previous car and got all the suspension installed for both front and rear. Next pedals, steering and wires for the dash. I love the bare aluminum rims with this color, I will give them a refresh over the winter. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...176e3eeea8.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2afaadf2d3.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...b258056878.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...525460bdf0.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...c859e6ab67.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project Big day for electrical stuff on Saturday. Got the factory harnesses back in place in the engine bay and under the dash. Tested the starter, lights, blower, ignition and gauges they are all alive and well. Fixed some broken wires on the wiring harness that came with my new shell and replaced all the fusible links with fresh wire. Also finished Custom ignition coil mounting for my system. Made this plate on Saturday for a nice discreet install https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...fb60c837b5.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...7143a92ac4.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...2c7efa3373.jpg |
Re: My new 1984 TA project The GFX are filled and ready for sealer going to paint them silver.
