compiling a list of Junkyards MD/VA

Hey guys, first things first, i realize that junkyards rotate stock so this thread could probably keep going and going as new stock is brought in

that being said, 91greenbird and I went on a journey today from Waldorf, MD up to Jessup, MD to go to Crazy Rays(i use to live in that area)

long story short Rays in jessup only had one thirdgen bird and one thirdgen camaro in the whole lot, the bird has a lot of the interior plastics intact still, i took the door sill plates as they were in very good condition and the RS's have seen better days

both 91greenbird and myself have new thirdgens(my iroc hasn't been shipped yet but its coming!) that need some parts, so we were hoping for some of you guys that visit yards regularly to chime in with the yards you visit

our plan is to plan a trip to hit all the other Crazy ray's yards sometime in the next two weeks, we can update our list of what cars are in what yard when we get back,

we are willing to travel a good distance(1-1.5 hours max) in either direction, heading to Baltimore or into Virginia, we know of the big name yards(Crazy rays, Brandywine/ransom, champion etc.) we are looking more for backwoods off the map kind of yards, we found Smittys and Redmonds off of Baltimore Annapolis blvd, but they were closed by the time we got there.

we are also willing to travel to people who are parting out thirdgens as long as you have the parts we are in need of!

any help would be great, and please feel free to update this thread whenever you visit a yard

Update

Crazy rays:

Hawkins point rd
-----------------
1 thirdgen camaro

Erdman avenue
----------------------------------------------
1 SC camaro, decent blue interior
1 92 bird stacked in the do not enter(guess its about to meet its maker)

Pulaski highway
----------------
2 thirdgen camaro's

Mt.airy
---------------------------------
1 thirdgen camaro(stripped out)

1 thirdgen bird

Ez Pickens(yard being re worked)
--------------------------------------
mud pit has a thirdgen bird sitting in it.

Needless to say not a single crazy rays yard has a desirable thirdgen with pull able parts(minus fenders/wheels/hoods)

We got checked in by a lady who seems to be very knowledgable about the yard, other than that there was two guys working on a big ford truck, didnt see the blind guy but he could have been in the trailer

They now have 2, and they have got to be the most rusty thirdgens I have ever seen. Nothing much left on them. At one point a few years back, they had about a dozen thirdgens. Slim pickens at all the yards, unfortunately.

slim pickens is exactly what we are finding out, the ones we were finding in crazy rays had been picked over except the bird that was a new arrival and "drove in" to the jessup location

anyone have any recommended yards at all? i know this is kinda the do not enter sub-forum, but their has to be some off the radar yards on some back roads somewhere, then again most guys are using thirdgens in the junkyards to make some cash so i guess they don't wanna give up their honey holes yet.

Re: compiling a list of Junkyards MD/VA

Hit Hawkins Point and Erdman Ave today:

The '87 Camaro at Hawkins Point is actually an IROC. I grabbed the Wonder Bar, front sway bar, and fog light wiring and switch plate (the switch was broken). The only IROC-specific part that I saw remaining was the rear sway.

On Erdman, the '83 Berlinetta was still there, and there was also an '86 or '85 V6 Firebird. Caveman is right, that Berlinetta has a really nice interior. I did not see any rips on the driver or passenger seat. It's a pitty to see this one go to the crusher. There was somebody pulling the steering column in the Bird, so I didn't spend much time on it.

State Line Salvage Inc
2632 Robert Fulton Hwy, Peach Bottom, PA 17563
717-548-3232

It's just Past Rising Sun, MD, about 20 minutes from Elkton.
He has three Trans Am's, an '85, an '86, and a GTA (unknown year). The GTA is trashed, not much left. Also has two early Sport Coupes, a Berlinetta and a 4 banger Camaro (only one I have ever seen!).
The '85 is a WS6 with an LG4 and T5, though I think the T5 is gone. It's a shame it ended up in the yard, the PA plate has a '98 registration sticker, and the rotten VR16 Goodyear Tires look like they might have been original. This poor car had lots of road life left on it. Interior is gone, but most exterior is still there. Also still intacted is the 9 bolt with (non PBR of course) disks.
The '86 is a TPI I think, did not mess much with it, as it was raining today.

The guy is very proud of his parts. Prices are very high, but he has some decent stuff. He wants to know EXACTLY what you are looking for before you go in. When I got there, he was chewing some guys a$$ for taking a bugshield off a van and not asking. He will also tell you that he does not want to sell small stuff.

I stopped by Pick-a-Part's Stafford, VA yard today. Had one third-gen trans am, interior was pretty bare. Also had one third-gen Camaro (not sure which year), its interior was mostly there and the dash looked virtually un-touched - still had the stock radio even. (see attached photos).

There's a pick-n-pull in Clarksville, MD, called Glory Days: http://www.glorydaysautosalvage.com/ I've never been but I drive by it every Wednesday. It's just a few minutes off the exit for 108 on 32. It doesn't look like its very high volume, maybe about the size of the GM car section at Crazy Ray's in Jessup?

Also, if you're on Facebook, do a search for "This week in Camaro /used parts." A guy has a small lot and does nothing but F-bodies, primarily thirdgens. He posts new cars when he gets them -- most are complete. He's in Severn, MD, near the southwest corner of BWI.

Hit a different one today, in Brandywine MD. Right next to the huge Brandywine salvage place, there is a smaller yard called "Ransom Used Auto Parts" or something like that. They had an '82 bird with a factory 4 cylinder. Not many of those still around. The dash was still there, and it only had like 104K miles on it.

I've actually been there a while ago, forgot to update here, they have some good parts, I think a total of 4 thirdgens while I was there, but they were reworking the yard, looks like they changed pricing where before you can take tools in you have to go find a part and negotiate a price, which I guess isn't all too bad

Any other thirdgens at all? This is the closest yard to my house, use to hit up Ransome once a week back when I was 18

Only the '82 Bird. I take the kids to Kings Dominion every year, and we ride by this place. I tell them every year that I'm gonna stop, and that I am going to make them wait in the car while I poke around. It was my first time actually stopping. Way off the beaten path for me. The dude working the counter was super cool, though. Do they have decent pricing?

Caveman305 11-23-2013 08:36 AM

Re: compiling a list of Junkyards MD/VA

For the most part, back when I was going regularly there was a guy named Mike behind the counter most of the time, I believe he is the manager

I was spending $5 bucks here and there every time I came in to try different sensors that he eventually started giving me them at no charge

I only ever had an issue once when an older guy was at the counter, he tried charging me $75 for a re manufactured distributor(I could get a new reman from the part store for $90)

Their policy use to be all parts are at least 50% off the retail cost, I explained to him that it was stamped reman on the bottom but he was still trying to charge 50% of GM's price so I left the oil soaked dizzy on his counter, mike apologized to me the following week and sold it to me for $25

Most of the yards in southern MD are owned by Brandywine, including Ransom and Andrews(further down 301 towards La Plata)

Brandywine has a branch over here on the Eastern Shore, outside of Salisbury called Eden Auto Parts. They advertise as a pick-your-own but I have never been there.

Re: compiling a list of Junkyards MD/VA

hit up some of the crazy ray's yesterday along with Glory Days again(hoping they still had the thirdgens from last time)

Pulaski highway had a few v6 4th gens, stripped out interiors but most of them had intact motors 1 thirdgen bird, that had the rear and all suspension removed

Mt.Airy was a Haven of F-body's, I will be trying to make it back with more cash in the near future

Glory day's has changed dramatically since i was there last, you are only allowed down to the new fence line,no organization of cars, just all thrown together, there is maybe 8-10 rows of cars total you are allowed to pull from, and they only had one 4th gen camaro and one 3rd gen trans am(motor stripped to long block, interior was pretty picked over), but standing at the top of the yard you can see over the fence and locate most of the f-body's they use to have, im assuming they are stripping and selling parts on the internet for a premium instead of letting customers have at the cars

Jessup crazy rays had two 3rd gens and 1 4th gen, all had been picked over extensively

I hit Glory Days a few months back. At the time, they had two 91-92 birds in the front yard. I asked to go to the back yard to look around, and they brought me an escort to walk with. Seriously, I could not walk around back there without an escort. They had some neat stuff back there, 70's vettes, Bandit era T/A's and even a 69 Pace Car Camaro. But no third gens when I visited.

Yes sir, I could still see a lot of good cool cars in the back, the first time I went the f-body's were lined up exactly like the picture on the website, now they don't have any of them, unless they are in the back hidden

Chaz's up in Taneytown (Carroll County) has an 88 or 89 formula - my brother picked up an AC condensor, AC Delete pulley (just to have) and the power bulge hood from it for me this weekend.

Petry's in Westminster has a few also, mid 80's T/A and a couple 91-92 RS's.

I was there end of last summer and don't remember any f-body's accept a couple 4th gens all the way in the very back - pretty well picked over as I recall.

I do remember, b/c my buddy got the spindles & a few other parts for his '69, a mid-70's "disco-era" nova there that was so badly rusted, someone had actually bolted a bar to the rear frame over the drivers rear axle to "hold it together" where it had rusted through! Should've taken a picture of it!

that's nuts lol, yeah the first time i went to mt. airy, they had 2 thirdgens towards the front of the yard that were picked to the bone, and the 4th gens in the back that had nothing left, this time they had at least 4 thirdgens and a few 4th gens in the back of the yard

Is this Pulaski Highway? I stopped in last week, got their business card, but the street is throwing me for a loop. I know I was on Pulaski. Anyway, they have a blue 91/92 bird with a pretty nice interior. Console is in very nice shape, power mirrors, etc. TBI with high mileage. Friendly staff, very good prices. I took a few pieces off it, but was in a hurry. Guy said the car would be sticking around a while.

I stopped by the pick-a-part at the Stafford, VA location today (7/20/2014). Only 1 3rd Gen Camaro and it was picked to the bone. Probably about a dozen 4th Gen Camaros, many in good shape along with two 4th Gen Firebirds.

yeah, literally almost completely bare on the inside (not even carpet), but some of the trunk plastic was still there (but hard to get at without getting past the locked trunk).
Most of the body panels looked ok though.

Thanks for posting your findings and I'll post whatever I find whenever I go down to Stafford or Fredericksburg. They seem to be pretty active yards so you never know what will show up.
