spartyon 09-05-2003 08:49 PM

besides being at college, western illinois here in the great city of macomb il, i live in winthrop harbor. which is just over the border on the lake. the sad thing is my car is here in plymouth at my dads. next summer i plan on bringing it up.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-06-2003 05:01 PM

I just sold my weld draglite xp rims to a guy in plymouth Ill. but dont feel so bad about your car not being by you mine dosent even run right now and has no doors or fenders. I started a restoration that i dont know if i can finish :( but im gonna try:) i forgot all about the people in the nearby Ill. area so welcome to all of you guys too! maybe you guys want to tell me about your cars I will tell you more happy news about mine when i find some fenders cause i think i got a lead on some doors.

spartyon 09-06-2003 06:18 PM

yeah the guy that bought your rims is a good friend of mine. i was gonna drive up there and get them for him until you said shipping was only 35. that is cheaper the gas both ways so he is having you ship them. otherwise you would have met me. lol

BLUE 86 T/A 09-07-2003 12:53 PM

wow thats crazy! its a really small world.do you know any people in kenosha that own camaros or firebirds?

spartyon 09-07-2003 01:03 PM

no i dont. i lived down here, macomb/plymouth area for a good four years now and just moved back up to the windy harbor area this summer. i havent even gotten in touch with old friends yet let alone new car people.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-07-2003 06:13 PM

well maybe this thread will attract some more people and we can both get to meet some car people in the area i was kinda hoping to get a strong little group of third gen people together and do local shows and stuff and show some people what real cars are about- f*ck those imports!

IEatRice4dinner 09-07-2003 06:45 PM

i live in kenosha! i got a white 89 Iroc-z

BLUE 86 T/A 09-08-2003 02:53 PM

thats coolnow i got 2 people:hail: i got an 89 iroc too it was red now its primer and soon it will be black with white racing stripes hopefully i can get it on the road soon. if you see it flag me down. im realy happy today cause i got my new door now all i need is fenders and i will be ready for paint:D

spartyon 09-08-2003 05:39 PM

heres a question for ya kenosha guys. i remember going to this hot dog place with my old man when i was really young. they used to have bands there years ago. i am going out on a limb here but i think it was called "the spot" or something. anyway, is it still there if ya know. it used to be a really big hangout for music people and car people.

Confuzed1 09-08-2003 09:11 PM

Yeah, there's actually two of them, one on the north side were I live, and one south.

There's also already a car club of sorts in the area. And they meet at "The Spot" on the north side. I think on tuesdays and thursdays. I was there once and met a guy with a 75 Camaro, he was an OK guy but he says to me " I don't like the '82 and up F-bodys - I think they look cheap".

I must say, that didn't impress me too much, since I had my car parked next to his at the time.

BTW...If ya haven't figured it out yet, I'm in Kenosha too. Just look for the middle-aged pudgy guy in the primered 83Z with quad Hooker tailpipes out the back. ;)

- Peace

spartyon 09-08-2003 09:54 PM

i think you need to change your name. the pack aint back.lol. sorry just a loyal shrug shrug bear fan.

but yeah, the spot is a hot dog joint if memory serves me correct. thats cool. i will have to check it out when i come back up from school. i actually miss the area. i really like the new referbished beach area. i remember as a kid that it was really scary to drive up there.

Yeah, OK don't rub it in!! But I don't see "Da Bears" doing much either so far....:)

Actually it's not just a hot dog joint. Thier burgers are the most popular thing there. Don't know what's scary about driving there though??

spartyon 09-09-2003 01:28 PM

no i meant driving to where they redid the lakefront, not the hot dog/burger place.

Confuzed1 09-09-2003 04:32 PM

OK - makes sense now.

By looking at your sig, I'm not sure I'd want to race you there!! ;)

spartyon 09-09-2003 04:57 PM

well its not ready to drive yet. i still need i high performance tranny, new rear, sub frames, lcas, more suspension stuff, gauges, shifter, and a few more engine things before she starts. i am looking at the griffen 31x19 radiator but am thinking of other ideas that dont make sense yet. one of them being having a radiator fabbed up. but once shes done i hope she performs to my expectations. they are set at around 400 horses.

Confuzed1 09-11-2003 01:25 AM

My car will be out of commission too this winter. I'll be putting together a sbc 400 as soon as I figure out the parts and pieces I'll need.

Kind of a shame since my little 305 runs great, and basically has a fresh rebuild (less than 10,000)

Anyways, I have an out of control post going on in the Tech/General engine section on this board.

But why would you have to fab up a radiator?? Why not go with a good stock one? A griffin will cost an assload of money, and you won't gain any performance with it. Just curious...

Sounds like you have a good handle on everything else! 400 HP should be plenty respectable!

spartyon 09-11-2003 12:53 PM

well i think the griffin is around 160 and the stock replacement is around 120 so i would do the griffin since its a little bigger and all aluminum. i was considering fabbing a radiator just because i think it would be fun, unusual and kind of cool to do.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-13-2003 06:09 PM

got my fenders last night!:D now i just gotta sand them and the doors and my car will be ready for primer and paint. hey guys i got a question what dose it mean when your tuned port 350 wont run with the mass air sensor conected? it runs unhooked but it stalls alot and runs really rich. maf sensors cost alot so i dont want to replace it if i dont have to do you think it could be the computer?have any of you iroc guys had this problem? i dont know if it helps but my motor is an 89.

88 350 tpi formula 09-13-2003 07:29 PM

sounds like a bad mass air flow sensor.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-14-2003 12:07 PM

is it possible to get my car diagnosed without the maf hooked up?

Hey BLUE 86 T/A -

I assume that you're still on the computer since you have a MAF in the first place. Any "check engine" light?? If the MAF is bad, you should have a code stored on the computer. You should be able to jumper the computer terminals and see what it's telling you.....If ya have a Chiltons or Haynes manual, they should tell you how to pull the codes out.

Oh - I just read that you want a response from IROC guys - I own a Z28, but I think both the Z and IROC are pretty much the same. - Good Luck!!

BLUE 86 T/A 09-15-2003 03:03 PM

no im not just looking for iroc people any thirdgen car will do its just that i own an iroc but i love em all i checked it out and it is my maf so does anyone want to get rid of one?

Ok - you like IROC's....so why's your name BLUE 86 T/A??

See how I came up w/my screen name??

Sorry - no MAF's here. Q-Jets don't need em. ;)

Try Sturtevant Auto...if ya can find one there, it should be cheaper.

Hello, I'm from Kenosha too, I just got started with this message board. First time posting, but I've been a reader for sometime. If ya wanna see what my ride looks like check out my webpage,

http://www.angelfire.com/darkside/nutzz28

spartyon 09-16-2003 10:07 AM

glad your aboard. nice looking ride you have there. where was that pic taken? the scenery looks so familiar.

TheNutzZ28 09-16-2003 12:40 PM

Thanks, I took that picture about a year ago at Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie. I just took some more pictures out there but I don’t have them in the computer yet.

spartyon 09-16-2003 01:07 PM

thats it. i new it looked familiar. i live/lived right over the border in winthrop harbor. do you know if they finished state line road yet?

TheNutzZ28 09-16-2003 01:11 PM

Nope, haven't been down that way lately.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-16-2003 02:56 PM

i got my name from my old car that i had when i got on thirdgen.org nice car nutz28 glad to see you finaly got registerd

Confuzed1 09-17-2003 01:05 AM

So how many is that from Kenosha?? I finally read the topic!...

Hey spartyon - Did you buy the whole rotating assy for your engine? I'm really racking my brain over this 400 buildup so far as parts etc...

I'm looking at Eagle, cast crank, stock stroke, 5.7 rods, hyper. pistons (unsure which) and Dart Iron Eagle heads (also unsure which). Another thing is the cam. Everyone seems to run rollers in these, but I think I'll just run the hyd tappets, since I want my powerband from 1000 to around 6000 RPM's, so a huge duration cam shouldn't be needed, although I do need a good lift for torque down low. Any of this make sense? I'd like to get at least 400 HP at the flywheel, run on pump gas, and still pass emissions.

Think it's possible?

spartyon 09-17-2003 11:21 AM

no i didnt. i bought a jrmotorsports short block and did the rest myself. i am dodging emissions since my dad lives down here by macomb, il where they dont have em.

fireturd350 09-18-2003 12:46 PM

Griffon offers a universal fit 31x19 radiator... it's around 180 bucks. Only thing is you'll need to wire up a heater core return (no fitting on this radiator). It can be done by putting it threw the water pump. Most pumps have an axt. opening on the top side for this use.

You can score some nice brand new Eagle stuff of ebay... I got a 4340 forged 400 crank (good to 1k hp for 380 bucks shipped). I wouldn't use hyper pistons... TRW makes some really nice forged ones. Other companies make nice ones too Probe, JE, and bunch of other ones...

spartyon 09-18-2003 01:19 PM

i think hypers will be fine as long as he doesnt spray it or put on forced induction setup. plus he is still trying to be smog legal so i dont think forged is necessary chris. anywho...i knew about that griffing and i dont need a heater return line because...well its not there lol.

fireturd350 09-18-2003 03:15 PM

Just saying CompCam Techs call them Hyperaches for a reason.

As long as you don't put nitrous/forced on them and you stay around 400 hp it should be ok... but there are some nice forged pistons out on the market for not too much more.

rsscoty 09-18-2003 05:48 PM

I live on the N. side of Milwaukee but drive my 91 RS to Racine and Kenosha about 2-3 times a week for work.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-19-2003 06:00 PM

wow this is getting more people than i thought it would! this is great. i know it is kind of late in the year but lets all meet up together and meet each other outside of the computer. any body got any ideas?i was thinkig like at a resteraunt or somthing and if they are roadworthy bring our cars.does that seem like a good idea? i dont know i will let you guys decide.

spartyon 09-19-2003 07:28 PM

if ican get up there for the weekend i would but i am at school 4 1/2 hours away.

Confuzed1 09-20-2003 12:43 AM

Just thought I'd check in!! :)

I decided not to get the bare 400 block. I might just get a 408 shortblock from this place: http://www.gustafengines.com/index.c...rt_Blocks.html

I'll most likely spend the extra cash for the Eagle crank and SIR rods. Mostly just for the piece of mind. I gotta call monday for more details on this. Whatta y'all think?

Just saying CompCam Techs call them Hyperaches for a reason.
I gotta say, I've rebuilt 4 different engines (including the L69 in mine now) and used hypers every time and have had no probs whatsoever....

BTW, I don't plan to use NOS but if I do, I would limit it to a 100 shot tops...It should handle it. ;)

I'd probably stop in to say :waveman: ....just look for the old dumpy fat guy - that'd be me! Just a warning...my oldest son is 21!!!

spartyon 09-20-2003 01:40 AM

have you looked at jr motorsport ltd ? that is where i got my shortblock and am very impressed with the quality of it as well as the service.

Looks like a good place, but their pistons, the lowest compression 406, using 76cc heads is 10:1!! It does come with a cam and double roller though, and that's a plus!

But a "Circle Track" cam??

Everything else looks great.

But on the other hand, Gastaf's is like, 210 miles from here - that's a BIG plus, cause I could pick it up w my truck and save a few bucks instead of paying shipping fees!! Pretty sure that would cost a few bucks to ship!!

spartyon 09-21-2003 12:38 PM

they are about 2 1/2 hours away from my dads house. they are locatedi n iowa. yeah i wasnt to pleased about the circle track cam and what not but after talking to the guy for a few more bucks i upgraded a few things.

BLUE 86 T/A 09-22-2003 02:44 PM
