Good luck passing smog The guy that just tested my GTA said they lowered the pass numbers 30% Dec 1, 2011. Looks like he was right. Here are the pass numbers from Jan 2010 AT 15 mph AT 25 mph HC CO NO HC CO NO 108 0.71 767 83 0.58 706 Here are the new numbers 76 0.50 537 58 0.40 494 I failed both HCs and the 15mph NO. I would have passed with flying colors at the old numbers. This arbitary lowering of the allowed emissions is total BS. Time to remove CA BAR, CARB and AQMD from the gene pool. |
Re: Good luck passing smog If my car emits the same as it did at the last test (10/29/2010), I'd still smack those numbers down: Results last test- 26, .01, 91; 19, .03, 35. Of course, I did just jinx myself. The only thing that was different then, than my current sig, is the torque converter. But, when I test again 10/2012, I could be looking at tighter yet target numbers. Bill |
Re: Good luck passing smog I cant believe you are getting such low results with that cam :) What does a stock L98 put out emissions wise? Figured with the cam you'd never get a clean exhaust. |
Re: Good luck passing smog Ditto, not as good as Bill but I'd do OK too. (Edit I dunno what Bill has but think I have LT4 hot cam in it?) Tested Oct. 25 I got 36, .09, 218; 50, .09, 195 I didn't do anything special before smogging, nothing to the car all year. (I don't even know how it was even running then, because shortly afterward they found a hole in fuel pressure regulator, exhaust leak, fouled up plug, idle was off...) |
Re: Good luck passing smog They might have different pass numbers for single cat/dual cat cars. Only way to tell is to take your last numbers and drop them 30%. Not what you put out, what their limit was. |

The stock injectors and tune send the HC's off the chart. A LOT of peolple don't believe the car passed, without some flim-flammery. But I just let the tech do his thing, while I innocently pretended to talk on the cell phone. I really wanted to video the test, and post it, but the camera would probably have made the tech nervous as a pimp in church. I think some of you 3rd Genners need to run a bigger cam, and a , uh, questionable intake:) Bill |

Re: Good luck passing smog And this is what, the 2nd lowering of the numbers in as many years. What are you gonna do when they lower it below what you emit now. If BAR and CARB are not curtailed soon they will send these cars right to the junk yards. You can take the "Oh I can pass" attitude all you want, but when you can't pass it will be too late. |
Re: Good luck passing smog Guess I better enjoy driving my car all next year since my smog isn't due till Feb. 2013. Five bucks I wont pass the next time. :( |
Re: Good luck passing smog Just checked my last #s 10 .00 199 11 .00 200 Doubt if they could get under that. |

Re: Good luck passing smog They are really coming down on the older cars next year it will be a smog every year instead of every 2... it might be time to look for a 1996 and new engine replacement if we want to keep driving our cars |

Re: Good luck passing smog Does sound insane...a vast majority of the cars in that state wouldnt pass...what would they do? Does this requirement actually cover older generations? How can you expect a car designed to 1 standard a few years ago, pass a new standard? Doesnt make sense. I can understand if thats a new requirement for 2012-2013 new vehicles that havent been out yet |

When I failed multiple times last year it turned out to be a bad cap and rotor. And yet the BLM's and INT's were showing just fine, too. Are they going to give everyone $20,000 towards a new Chevy Volt? Thats about the only way I can afford a new "clean" car. Oh, I know, all of us tax paying citizens will just leave the state, and they can keep supporting the rest without our money. |

Re: Good luck passing smog And a bottle of Guaranteed to Pass and a 70-80mph trip to Victorville and back didn't work. @Kevin all that has ~11,000 miles on it. The injectors are Bosch IIIs with about 6K on them. FWIW these are my numbers @15 96 0.34 548 @25 73 0.15 338 Failed both HCs and 15mph NO |
Re: Good luck passing smog more reason to go ls |
Re: Good luck passing smog The system sucks. I have all the maintenance records on this car. It had oil changes and tuneups at normal intervals, it has just over 90K miles on it no leaks no oil use. If you can't put 100K on engine that has been properly maintained the smog numbers are BS. Are we looking at rebuilding engines every 25K. And eventually the ls motors will be in the same boat. I am not familiar with the actual wording but I think the Feds require the smog equipt to be warrantied for 100K, what good is that if the smog numbers are so low that a 60K engine won't pass. Another thing I just noticed is that the AVG numbers are rising while the PASS numbers are going down. |

Re: Good luck passing smog Question for all you residents of Nazifornia....Is there a cut-off year for no more testing of older cars? In Texas it is 24 yrs & older (at 25 yrs it becomes exempt) & testing is only in certain counties. |

Re: Good luck passing smog The refs are easy im just about done with my swap and I know them by name lol all you have to do is have emissions they dont even raise the car... they check the pcm and engine bay emissions and give you a smog check... one of the huge benefits is your car becomes what ever year engine you put in smog wise so next year as the smog every year law kicks in ill only have to smog it every 2 years... and they arent even that expensive I got mine a complete longblock with arp and scat internals for $2500 making 400hp |

Re: Good luck passing smog The state cant keep lowering the % because if you fail smog and your car isnt modified you can qualify for a test only center to do repairs and they pay for a certain amount. with an already bankrupt california thats going to end to and they will have to find a happy medium |

Re: Good luck passing smog I started this post to inform those who care how the govt is only there to force the individual citizen to support them and big business. In this case by making your car worthless and having to buy a newer car paying sales taxes and higher license fees. Ostriches live in their own dream world. |

Re: Good luck passing smog Just tested mine this morning. Don dropped a rebuilt engine into it last spring... _______HC Max / Meas_____CO Max / Meas____NO Max / Meas 15mph______88 / 88__________0.55 / 0.15______1097 / 579 Pass 25mph______71 / 62__________0.41 / 0.01_______927 / 703 Pass *wipes forehead* |
Re: Good luck passing smog The allowed is different.... |
Re: Good luck passing smog OK, here's a reference point: 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3L, 125K Mi., bone stock: (Max/Meas) 105/5, .60/.01, 992/11; 93/2, 1.03/.01, 852/12. Looks like my car's a pig after all. |
Re: Good luck passing smog Damn...I thought this thread was about cheese & crackers. |
Re: Good luck passing smog Actually I did read the fine print. I just need 7 more people living with me to qualify. Failed again: HC Max 81 / Meas 18 CO .50 MAX / Meas .01 NOX MAX 537 / Meas 715 |
Re: Good luck passing smog Just wondering if you cut the hole in the gasket on the right side where the exhaust goes into the EGR. I know we cleaned the solenoid and checked the wires. Everything else looks good. Only the NOX failed. |
Re: Good luck passing smog Actually I'm going to set the timimg @ 4 BTDC. Someone else did that and it passed. |
