Is the pitman arm keyed or splined I wasnt paying attention when i put my 4th gen column in and now its 90 degrees out compared to the 3rd gen.. i just wanna know if i can pull off the pitman.. center the wheels and beat the damn thing back on there before i get it aligned or is there anywhere like the rag joint you can do the same thing |
It's master splined. You can only turn it 90* at a time but if it was never off then you'll only screw up the steering if you change it. Why don't you pull the steering wheel off and center it? |
i tried that.. the airbag, radio controls and horn are all keyed into the wheel so it looks like theres no getting around that.. i was lookig under there and can i just adjust the tie rods on each side shortening one and makin the other a bit longer? |
No. You can't do that. That will seriously screw up your steering angles. You should be able to rotate the steering column itself in the engine bay. There's a joint you can separate somewhere between the firewall and the rag joint. I don't know if you can adjust it by 90* though, I think only 180*.. |
The input shaft of the box is splined, and can be adjusted there, near the rag joint. Remove the bolt there (underneath the plastic cover), loosen the column up (3 bolts to the firewall, and the two nuts under the dash) inside the car to slide it back, and have a friend help you. |
The input shaft on the steering box is also master splined and will only go on one way. |
i thought i replyed here.. maybe im just losin it it is indeed keyed.. althought once you can spread the joint enough to get it 90 degrees and then beat it on again :D my steering is now 98%.. just need an alignment for the degree or so that its out so 4th gen columns do indeed work for third gens! :) eventually |
