What manual steering fits into the third gen. I no the s10 just not exactly sure of the years. trying to do the cheaper swap to get it rolling before dropping it on a flaming river

I bought a rebuilt one from one of the local auto parts stores, I asked for one for a 85 S-10. I know there were some small variations between years but the one I got for a 85 S-10 fit perfect.

84+ S10 box. You need the steering box with the 4 bolt top cover.

everywhere i go to try and order a reman cant order them or even locate one. It seems i have to go to a salvage yard

Do the manual s10 boxes use a power steering pitman arm?!?!

I had to make my own since the splines were different on the box that I used.

The early box with the 3 bolt top cover is not a direct swap. The input and output shafts are smaller. If you use the late model 4 bolt top cover box, it's a direct swap with the same size shafts. The S10 pitman arm is a slightly different length which will change your steering geometry but many people still use it with no problems. With the late model box, you can simply pull the pitman arm off your power box and install it on the manual box to maintain the correct steering geometry.

Ok I was just wondering why would you swap a power steering box for a manual one?
Would this be for drag racing or road racing

Drag racing for weight reduction. You need a quicker ratio and faster response of power steering for road racing.

how much weight will the s-10 box help you loose?

If you are even considering any type of street driving with turns, don't even switch out to manual as the weight reduction is not worth it for street driving. You basically are removing the weight of the power steering pump, brackets and hoses.

This is a great step though for drag racing as I have tried it myself with the s10 box, but did some street driving and trying to make a turn to get into my garage was too much, so I switched back to the PS setup.

S10 doesn't use a rack. It uses a standard GM steering box that bolts to the frame just like a power box.

I guess thats why they call it a pinto rack on kmembers?

Pinto and Mustang II are the 2 most common choices. The aftermarket choices are generally based off the Pinto design.
