Type II power steering pump on an 87

Has anyone converted to a type II power steering pump on an 87 before? If so, what pump, pulley and bracket did you use?

Thanks, Ryan

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

I have on an ‘86. I got a tough stuff type II pump and v-belt pulley from speedway, used their aluminum block mount power steering pump bracket and a universal remote reservoir. Had a local hydraulic hose shop build a simple 14”-ish hose with a 90* bend at each end to adapt it to the box. I may have had to use an adapter to connect hose to gearbox but don’t remember. Super easy swap. If you want the pn’s I used I’ll have to do a bit of research to recall them. It’s a nice upgrade for appearance and weight most definitely but made the steering very light even with the smallest restrictor on the box.

Yes, I want to know also.

Pictures of your setup too please.

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

Tuff Stuff TC pump PN 6175AL-4 is what I used, others will work.

Sweet Mfg v-belt PS pulley 310 30026. Whatever pulley works for you depending on your belt setup, needs to be a press-on type with a .662” bore though.

PSC power steering bracket MB05K

KRC 91510000 looks just like the one I’m using but I didn’t pay $96 for mine. I don’t remember what brand it was but it was significantly less money. I think I used PSC for this too.

For a v-belt setup use Gates 7355 belt.

The pressure hose was made by a local hydraulic shop with the 90* 10AN female fittings because this pump outputs 1200psi and I made the bracket holding the reservoir to the cylinder head. Easy to make though

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

I keep getting error messages while trying to upload my pics but it’s really straight forward on installation. Also know that the pump has a 16x1.5mm o-ring outlet port so you’ll need an adapter to AN if using this particular pump and an identical adapter on the gearbox. Tuff Stuff has some with 10AN pressure port fittings. The reservoir had AN ports on it so put AN to hose barb adapters to simplify the plumbing on the return and suction lines. Lastly, I did have to drill out one of the threaded mounting holes to run a bolt through to the block mount.

Thanks for the details.

Has anyone made a gm pump with stock reservoir work?

Can anyone tell me where to start looking for a stock gm pump and reservoir that could work?

SilverChicken, if you could get the pictures to work, I'd like to see how you mounted the reservoir.

Hard to really see but it’s .125” sheet steel that uses the 3 bolt holes in the passenger side head and holds the reservoir level

Here you can see the block mount. I bought the smallest orifice restrictor that had a 10AN male fitting available. It’s still overboosted for my taste. I’ll fix that suction line one day when it matters to me.

In this pic you can see another part of the bracket I made for the reservoir and how it’s bolted to the head. I’ll get a cleaner shot of it later for you.

Is the jeep pump a bottom outlet?

I need to run a v-belt. Is the Jeep Pump still the 0.666" or so shaft size?

Might it be from a 2004 Jeep? The pics I get from searching for a 2005 look like they feed from below.

TORN, is this what the bottom of the reservoir looks like?

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

Nope mine comes out the right side. I had two pumps at the time so I might have swapped the reservoirs. Other pump was off a S-10 but it was a smaller shaft size and smaller volume pump. Thats why I went and grabbed the jeep pump.

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

Those pictures are worth 1000 words. See how much cleaner that pump is than the A can? And I bet it's easily adjustable too.

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

TORN has me interested in his belt setup! I ran across somewhere that steel factory pullies have about a 400hp/6k rpm limit and I’ve well exceeded one and right at the other. Or is there any real validity to the hp limit? I could see how there is but never heard of anyone blowing their factory steel pullies apart either.

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

I don't buy it. Back in the day, 283 & 302 SB Chevys turned 8000+ rpm with steel pulleys. All GM ever did was make the 302 pulleys "deep groove" to help keep from throwing the belts off.

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

Does anybody know of a v-belt pulley that can be used with the 4th gen Camaro pump?

rgauder 12-26-2018 07:53 PM

Re: Type II power steering pump on an 87

Will the stock pulley fit on the 4th gen Type II pump, it appears to be a 19mm pulley? Or does anybody know how to get the pressed in reservoir nipple out?
