Two coolant temp sensors?
 

hey, i noticed the there are two coolant temps sensors, one on the block under the passenger head and one on the intake right up front, whats the deal? why have two unless im mistaken.

i know one runs the fan but which one runs the temp gauge?

There's actually 3.

The one in the intake is the coolant temperature sensor. It's what the computer uses to read coolant temp.

The one in the passenger side cylinder head in between the #6 and #8 spark plugs is the coolant fan switch. It's what turns on/off the fan when the coolant reachs a certain temp. (stock switch closes at 238*, IIRC).

The one in the driver's side cylinder head in between the #1 and #3 spark plugs is the the coolant temp. sending unit. It's what the gauge in the dash uses to read coolant temp.

Right on dude. Hey man I don't have the one between 6 and 8. I can't even find the wires. I noticed that my fans just pretty much run all the time. Is there a way to fix this or what?

Yes, you just have to figure out which way the previous owner decided to do that. For some reason, people used to think it was a good idea to have the fan run all the time.

I would take a really close look at the wiring from the fan relay, especially the green/white wire. If it's grounded anywhere, the fan will run constantly. 2 common way I have seen people cause the fan to run all the time is to either remove the connector for the fan switch or the AC pressure switch and ground it.

dont think i ever saw a sensor or unit on the driver side head, have to look for it. So ive had a finicky temp gauge for a year now. assuming i have no gauge problems my next check would be the sending unit?

Dude it basically gets no hotter than 160. I mean it runs great even though I don't have the temp sensor. I probably will just keep it the way that it is.

if you remove the thermostat and the fans run all the time wont that confuse the computer and make the car run rich all the time?just wondering if anyone has input on that....i was told not to put a low temp stat in a stock car because it would cause the car to run ragged and never warm up to what the computer is looking for to make other componets work properly...

for mine theres always the possibility that i have a 160 degree thermo and it just doesnt get hot after that,,, seems slim.
if i have a stock thermo i know my gauge is running wrong because it just stops at 160. i put in another sending unit last night that i cleaned all the corrosion off of it and it made no difference. i have a fan switch wired up and i use it but an accurate guage would certainly help.

Are you dudes asking how cool a SBC will run without a Thermostat? Are you asking if emissions will be affected, or are you dudes asking something else?

Notice the "dude" thing...funny, I can see that coming up in normal conversation, people get into a habit of speech and don't really realize what they are saying.

well, now that someone mentioned the temp/fan/coolant sensor (the one on the passenger side between 6 and 8 plug)...can someone tell me about the sensor? regarding issues with using a lower temp sensor, is there any particular "type" to buy, should it keep my engine a little cooler? what is a good temperature range for a lower temp sensor?...any information is appreciated (also, does a lower temp sensor just turn the fan on sooner...is that all it does?)

That's basically true. If the engine ran too cool, it would never get into closed loop, which would cause you to suffer some MPG and driveability. Basically, closed loop is just when the computer uses the oxygen sensor as an input to adjust the air/fuel ratio and other parameters of the engine. The only problem, is that O2 sensors are not very accurate when cold, so the car has to run for a while and heat up enough. Usually, the exhaust temp. has to be above 600* and the coolant temp. has to be above 160* for the computer to go into closed loop.

That's not saying you can't install lower temp fan switches or thermostats though. Generally, you want an engine to run in the 180* to 220* range, but it's really up to your preference.

The fan switch just turns the fan on or off, according to coolant temperature. When the coolant temp. reachs whatever the switch is set for, it closes (internally) which grounds the wire to it, which kicks on the relay, which kicks on the fan motor.

Most companies out there seem to sell fan switchs in the 200* and 185* range. Both Hypertech and Jet (check Summit Racing or Jegs) make fan switches for our cars for about $40, but their are cheaper ones out there. A quick search should yield some other options.


Here's what I'm using, for example, part number 609-106:

Turns the fan on at 200*, only costs $13, and is a direct bolt-in for the stock one.

can someone here help me with my fualty temp guage? it stops at 160 consisitantly and i dont have test equipment to see if the voltage drop is in the wire. ive heard the temp guage itself can be the problem but how do i fix it?

Have you thought about just getting an aftermarket one with an a piller pod or something? Because to tell you the truth our gauges kind of suck.

in regards to totall cost i think id go with a nordskog or dakota digital gauge pack thats custom fit, they look sweet

too freaking expensive, id rather go 14's then look cool. is the inconsistancy in the wiring or the gauge pod or what? this might be the answer to the original question.

To tell you the truth I don't know what it is. I mean for instance my tach is like 1000 off at idle and like 3500 off at the mid range in the rpms. Also my oil gauge is always pegged out. So I went to a 5"tach and an after market oil gauge and am thinking of going with a temp gauge also. So to answer your question don't really know why I just know that lots of people have the same problems with their gauges in these cars.

If you have that many problems with your gauges, I'm sure it isn't just because they've gone bad. They wouldn't all crap out at once. Check all the wiring to the gauges, and check all the grounds. I'm sure its a faulty ground or bad connection, fix that and I bet they all work much better. It's just a bit of a PITA to go through the wiring.

Well I wouldn't really know where to start when it came to checking the wiring. Do you mean the ground that are bolted to the back of the heads?

Yeah digital gauges are expensive that is why I don't have them!!!LOL!!! I have all analog gauges.

k yea i can def see grounds being a prob, i dont really care how the gauge cluster connects to the contacts anyways, it seems a lil iffy. So next step is testing how would i clean those contacts? i cant really use steel wool ill short out the whole dash so,,, options? mineral spirits and a rag? and also i need to check wherever the ground goes to from there, anyone know where the ground for the dash gauges ends up??

take a womans fingernail file and cut it to the shape you need...file a little and blow off excess...this sounds gay but go to the womens makeup aisle and look for fileing options...Im married and my wife is missing several files and stuff like that:D

right but the emery board is already tough enough that it wont bend...and you will be able to grip it better,but the sandpaper willwork also
