very hard to start
 

ok, the past week i've noticed my idle getting rougher and rougher..to the point where my hood would vibrate. Then i went to the 1/4 strip today and after the 1st pass i turned the car off, let it sit, and when i went back to start it, the car would start, but the idle would be VERY VERY rough and go back and forth between 300-800 rpm and when i pressed the gas pedal the engine wouldnt rev. I would have to start it about 7 times before it would finally keep a steady idle. Also, i was disappointed with 15.8 @ 86.7 mph timeslips..this coming from a slightly modded 305 TPI...correct me if i'm wrong, but isnt 15.8 WORSE than stock? Some guy told me that my computer was putting out codes 34 and 40 i think, which were MAF sensor and the engine was running lean. This leads me to suspect the fuel filter is clogged and not letting fuel get to the engine, which would explain running lean AND the horrible timeslips. Anyone got any comments or suggestions?? I was really expecting low 15's

yes a fuel filter might set a lean condition code,but not a maf code.those are pretty notorious for going bad

replace your sensor

Unless you implicitly trust "some guy", I'd advise scanning for error codes yourself. Whatever you find might help answer the idle problems. It's gotta be worth five minutes to get the error codes first hand, instead of from "some guy".

well the 'some guy' that i was referring too was somebody that i had seen at the local Car Shows during the summer and I've also seen his car on Fbody.com. So I trust that he wouldnt screw me over since he had a '87 T/A with a 305/5-speed that knocked down a 13.9, so i think he would know what he was doing. and i dont have a code scanner anyways

You don't need a code scanner to scan for codes. All you have to do is use a paper clip to jump the first two holes on the top of(a & B) the ALDL connecter under the drivers dash. Then turn the key to the "on" postion but not running. The SES light will flash 12, then any error codes you have. Hope that helps. ~Arnold
