engine build Well looks like i need new main bearings. So i was thinking of just building the engine now while its out what would i need to achieve a streetable 350 to 400 whp? Its a 1979 sbc 350 all i currently have is an edlebrock performer intake and a edlebrock 650 carb. So what would a good cam be?? I have a cpl sets of heads but im not sure on casting numbers where are the numbers located at? |
Re: engine build The casting numbers are located on the top of the heads where the valve covers would normally cover. My cam choice would be something like the comp 268h. With decent heads and exhaust those numbers are not too hard to reach. |
Re: engine build will check the numbers and forgot i also have edlebrock tes headers |
Re: engine build 1 Attachment(s) Heres one sent these look to be for centerbolt valvecovers and the other heads are not. here is a picture of one set if you cant read the number its 14102191 Attachment 404528 |
Re: engine build This are swirl-port TBI truck heads, not a great start for a performance build. |
Re: engine build 1 Attachment(s) heres the 2nd set of heads number is 462824 which set would be better? Or do you suggest getting a set? Attachment 404521 |
Re: engine build 624s are a large chamber, small valve, thin casting smog head from the 70s. If someone gave me a set for free, I'd wonder what I'd done to offend them. |

Im getting a different shortblock for now but with a roller cam what pushrods would i need with the other heads? And could i swap rockers from these heads? This motor ill be building over the winter so what would be a good set of heads to get? or what else should i do to achieve my 400whp? |
Re: engine build Swirl-ports aren't going to get you 400 HP either, unfortunately. For that much RWHP, you'll probably be looking at something aftermarket. You might get close to that much flywheel horsepower with a set of good stock heads, or a set of Vortecs. |

Re: engine build Pushrods will depend on which heads and valvetrain parts you use. |

Re: engine build It would still depend on what lifters, cam and heads you use. |
Re: engine build its gonna be a 92 350 tpi motor and those swirl port heads and the rockers from the 624 |
Re: engine build ended up finding a good deal on a good motor so i can build that along the way. It has 202 heads and a "RV" cam? (not sure what that means) And i have my edle 650 and edle performer intake. |
Re: engine build Sounds like a truck motor with a truck cam, probably with some old 70s smogger heads that have been hogged out to take 2.02" intake valves. Probably makes something like 200 HP |
Re: engine build its 3998993 heads |
