lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long Hey guys, I went to install an lt1 starter on my new 383 stroker l31 block and bought the average 3 pack of starter bolts. the longest bolt is about 5/8" too long and the shortest bolt is about 3/16" too long. These bolts match the original bolts that were on my stock 305 starter too. anyone ever ran into this before? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...4bff686cc.jpeg |
Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long The last lt1 starter I bought came with the bolts (used) You might ask this seller about the length. https://m.ebay.com/itm/95-97-Camaro-...0AAMXQq8BQ8iTL http://nastyz28.com/threads/starter-bolt-issue.172519/ |
Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long thanks tuned, I'll message the seller and see if he can get me measurements. I've seen that thread on nastyz28 earlier and I'm thinking it might be worth it to go to the dealership and see if they can get the bolts for a 96 camaro. I just bought a second pack at autozone that appeared to be the right length but the thread is different, I was too caught up in the fact that they looked like the right length and said GM on them to check if the thread was correct  |
Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long You need the bolts that go with the starter. Block doesn't matter. |

Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long I couldn't locate that short bolt anywhere online on its own, and couldn't get the correct length at the auto parts stores either. So after much aggravation I started looking at ARP bolts, and they have the correct set for the 4th gen f-body LT1 starter. It's ARP 430-3516 for the 6 point set. They also offer these bolts in 12 point, but my car tool kit is 6 point so those aren't for me. |
Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long last time I needed some, just got them at autozone, hanging on the rack |
Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long it’s been a couple years so i can’t remember what part numbers i used but i did end up finding the ones that worked |
Re: lt1 starter on l31 block, starter bolts too long This link has the correct length and threads for the bolts. A lot of guys are unaware that chevy went to metric threads in the starter bolt holes in the early to mid 80's. Putting the wrong hardware in a block can crack the outside bolt hole/ear. Notice if you buy a starter at the parts stores, some of them end with a part number-"M". That would be the metric starter. You can put a metric starter on an older block, but just make sure to use the correct 3/8-16, knurled hardware. The metric and SAE threads are very similar looking. Just thought i would pass on info. https://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Starter_motors |
