posi borge warner 9 bolt

just wondering how dependable is a factory posi 3.23 borge warner 9 bolt is, bought it and it has disc brakes and came with master cyl. and prop valve, "its a complete deal, caliper to rotor and em cable. all suspension arms, even full of fluid , hope its good, gave 200 bucks, maybe i will come out ok, putting it uder my 86 drum iroc. is there a known common problem with these? thought even if posi has problem, the rear disc should be a improvement

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

3.23 isn't a 9 bolt ratio closest would be 3.27 the 9 bolt is a better rear than the 10 bolt but parts cost more than the 10 bolt.

The 9-bolts were the M78, bought out by Dana.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

Are you sure that it's a Borg Warner? The 3.23 is a 10 bolt gear. There are good and bad points to both rear ends. The 9 bolt is a little better. The posi in the 9 bolt can be reconditioned at least one time.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

Borg Warner bought Dana years ago, so it's "technically" a BW now.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

??? How did Dana come into this?

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

although what stephen said may be correct it is and always will be a borg warner... cars that went back for warranty with a g92 b/w got it replaced with a dana 44 which is the best stock rear and found in the front of older 4x4 chevy/ford trcks and in rear of wagoneers...200 seems like a good deal at any rate for it if u want rebuild one it would be really expensive www.9bolt.com has the prices of the parts to do it

there's no E in borg, it's not french.

d44 is in my bronco and all those guys hate how weak they are. For some reason 3rdgenners think they are great and pay a huge price since they are uber rare.

9bolts are great because they have 4-spiders. Last a long time behind and auto. I beat the crap out of mine behind a stick and made it whine, but it didn't break.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

The Dana 44 in the front of the Bronco is weak because guys put 33 inch or larger tires on them and the 28 spline axles can't handle it when you get the truck in a bind. Compared to the 7.5 inch rear ends that came in the third gen, the 8.5 inch Dana 44 is very strong. There are also MANY more options for differentials in the Dana 44. The BW only has one, and it's a cone type. I know a guy who has a third gen Dana 44 for sale, but he wants about $1800 for it.

I'm pretty sure there's an aftermarket locker available for the M78 in Australia.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

I've heard that there is something made in Germany for these rear ends, but it is extremely expensive.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

In Germany? Is this BW rear used in other cars? Maybe I can find what that German thing is.

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

I read it on this sight somewhere. I might have misunderstood, but I thought it was Germany.

Not sure about anything from Germany, but KAAZ from Japan makes an LSD for the 9 bolt. It'll run you about $1200 though.

That's probably the one I was thinking of.

That KAAZ is only for one pontiac and thats the 2004-2006 gto... deff not a 9 bolt...

Despite the different axle assembly, I do believe that the center section is the same, which means the KAAZ would fit a 9-bolt.

Is their anyone or anyway someone can verify this?

Re: posi borge warner 9 bolt

GTO's don't have the same center sections. This KAAZ unit fits 9 bolts though:

Nope. Been there done that, even joined an Aussie board. There was a local Aussie outfit redrilling one for a Ford rear to fit, but they broke a lot. And for the price of the KAZ you can get a bolt in Ford nine with a truetrac.
