T5 noise, neutral only... Hey guys, I'm getting a new noise from the t5 in my 89 rs. It is a whine type noise that only occurs when cold and in neutral sitting still, foot off the clutch pedal. If I put some slight pressure on the shifter where 4th would be it stops the noise all together. If I depress the clutch pedal it stops the noise all together. It has fresh fluid in it, new clutch kit with new centerforce release bearing and pilot. No visible leaks anywhere. I've searched and found whine noise threads but they don't seem to apply to my specific situation on only being noisy while stopped in neutral. Any t5 gurus in here that can offer some insight? |

Re: T5 noise, neutral only... The throw out bearing shouldn't really even be touching the pressure plate with the clutch out. If the trans makes noise when the the clutch pedal is out, shifter in neutral, than the input shaft is locked to the crank with none of the gears engaged. So the noise is coming from the transmission until you press the clutch or preload the trans by applying pressure to the shifter. I'm gonna go with noisy bearings in the trans. |
Re: T5 noise, neutral only... Not the throwout bearing. THIMK: the throwout bearing is the piece that the clutch linkage presses on, and in turn presses on the clutch. It might make noise when the clutch is being pressed, or when it's not; but has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with "neutral". It's just the innards of the transmission spinning. In neutral with the clutch out, the clutch disc is forcing the clutch gear to spin, which forces the countergear to spin, which forces every one of the gears to spin on the mainshaft. The mainshaft, which is connected to the drive shaft, is sitting still if the car is, or spinning at some rate related to the car's ground speed. A certain amount of noise in that operating state is normal. If it's not inordinately noisy any other time, it's fine. |
Re: T5 noise, neutral only... I'm just finishing rebuilding my T5, I would guess it's the bearings between the input shaft and the output shaft. When I pulled my trans, it only had 1 of 4 bolts so it was being held up by the shaft so the ends were completely destroyed, I noticed this same kind of whine in natural and not in gear before I pulled it. |

The clutch gear (its name isn't "input shaft") and the mainshaft (not "output shaft") have a difference in their speeds of engine RPM when in neutral, clutch out, and sitting still. Could also be the countergear bearings. They often do the same thing when they've been run dry. And that part of course is also spinning at any time that the clutch gear is. |

I know the trans has never been run dry, and this is a new noise that I've never noticed in the previous 2 years of owning the car. Just seems odd that it has started out of the blue like this. |
