1991 camaro class project

Hey all, I am an instructor in a Auto Body shop and we are building a 1991 camaro. We are swapping the V6 for a 383 stroker by West coast engines. I am also rebuilding the rear with 411 posi from Yukon Gear. My transmission builder is asking for the whole tire size so he can setup the tranny for the car. I am putting coil overs on the rear to lower the stance and want to fill the rear wheel well. Any suggestions on tire size? Thanks

Far and away the most typical tire diameter is somewhere between 25.5" and 26" That's stock for most thirdgens, possibly ALL, though there may be some outliers. The 245/50/16 tires that came on almost all IROCs/z28/TA/GTA and Formulas, especially in later years, measure just over 25.5". Obviously certain dedicated track cars whether it be drag or autox etc. etc. may have specific reasons for going with a different size, but I'd say most builds keep it in the 25.5" to 26" range.

As for rear tire WIDTH, obviously 245 was the widest from the factory, except for the FireHawks in 91/92 if you count that. Those SLP cars, along with the 4th gen SLP cars ran a 275mm tire, and that's probably the "Current" most popular width. Most modern 17" repop wheels from Hawk's or Classic Industries are 9 or 9.5" and 275mm works perfectly, and of course, it fits without issue. I think a lot of guys are fitting 295mm without issue too, BUT....if I'm not mistakes, some are needing some slight massaging to the inner quarterpanel. ....then of course if you're willing to do some work, well the sky is the limit.

This is a Mickey Thompson 255/60/15 is measures 27.3” diameter and a section width of 10.1. The car is lowered 1.5” and on a 15x8 wheel with 4.5” backspacing. If you’re looking for a tire for a stock wheel this may not help at all. It’s has no rubbing and nothing has been trimmed or beaten with a hammer.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...0270aa722.jpeg

Cool project. Great for the students to get some real hands on experience.

Careful doing the coil overs. The shock(rear) and strut(front) mounts on the body weren’t designed to handle the full weight of the car. Additional reinforcement would be advised if going down that road. Alternatively, you could stay with the stock configuration and use upgraded parts.
