2" smooth pulley with guides, 6 rib

Anyone know where I can get one? I looked at the dayco catalog and everything is 3" diameter or larger.

I have some space limitations, and I need a smooth idler pulley (with flanges/guides).

How about a timing belt tensioner or idler?

Re: 2" smooth pulley with guides, 6 rib

i was thinking the same thing. i changed a timing belt on a DOHC 2.2, isuzu rodeo not long ago. we used an AC delco kit. the idlers were about 2". i forget what year though?

heres the link i sent her when i ordered the kit;
http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....415977&jsn=384

here i just guessed 2001;
http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....sn=487&jsn=487

i can look tomorrow and see if i still have the old pulleys around? but they're about $12 on rock auto.

edit, it was a 2003 if its any help? found an oreily link i sent her. maybe they sell just the pulley?

Re: 2" smooth pulley with guides, 6 rib

can you knock down the 6 ribs?

Last time I was in a similar search, I found eBay pics helpful. Nothing I was working with at the time meets your specs.

Something fun I learned with a late model with smooth pulley was the original nylon pulley caused spalling of the belt; steel pulley fixed it right up. Lots of info on belt failure on the Gates etc. sites.

I'm going to try one of those. Might work.

When I tried a 2" unflanged pulley I had, the belt for some reason walked off it and got chewed up.. I'm not sure why.

Thanks!

If I had a ribbed pulley of the correct diameter, I could just stick it in my lathe and turn it into a smooth idler. But I couldn't find any ribbed ones that were around 2" diameter, only 3" or larger.

An alternator pulley has the size you need...;

GM Delco# AD244 AD230 CS130D 52mm

Yeah but no bearing. It might be more work to try and find a bearing to press in it.

This is my problem:

This actually works fantastic, but the pulley is like 1/4" away from the radiator hose and I'm not sure if when the motor torques it might rub the pulley. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

I can't really move the water neck, it's already hard against the intake coupler.

The pulley from a serpentine belt tensioner is too big? There are countless timing belt pulleys in small sizes, should be able to find one the right diameter, the width just might not be right... How about machining an alternator pulley to press fit on a good bearing?

Joe the upper radiator housing looks like it was bent slightly upwards to fit the aftermarket radiator, if you don't want to use the alternator pulley, I would just take the next step and cut two inches off of the lip of that upper radiator support that faces the engine and seat the aluminum radiator two inches forward, run a longer upper hose to clear the pulley, then lock it into place...

If I do that the radiator hits the hood. I have to keep the radiator angled slightly towards the engine to fit.

I don't want to cut up the radiator support to lower it. As it is I'm getting sick of working on this car. It's parked outside right now as my C4 is on the lift (freeze plug leak!), I just wanna fix a few minor things on this thirdgen so I can trailer it to the track.

If I just had a smaller diameter idler I'd be all set. I used a smooth one with out flanges, but it threw the belt.. I don't know why. I've run it for a few hours with this one and no issues. triple checked alignment.

The only reason for the idler is because the waterneck is soo damn low on the miniram I can't run it to the tensioner like I had with the HSR.

That's what Rob was suggesting. Not a terrible idea, I can machine one up on my lathe. I just need to find a press fit bearing. I guess I'll measure a pulley and check the timkin catalog for a bearing.

Yeah if you look at my pic, the stock idler pulley is just a little too close to that radiator hose for me. I mean, it hasn't hit yet but..

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I have an idea, and if you want it just pay shipping and it's yours. The V6 came with these on the 3rd gen, it is a bracket that bolts to the upper radiator housing over the top of the radiator. All you need to do is run a longer upper hose that goes straight to the radiator, then it does a 90 degree to where you need it to go. The 3.1 V6 hoses run that way. This will keep the hose away from the pulley by fixing it and locking it into place. Forgive the paper in the pic, I just had ate a hero lol...

Dayco 89537 is 56mm, 6 rib, steel, 2 bearing, and 10.3mm bolt hole. Should be under 2" after you break some ribs.

Everything else Dayco is is non-gated, or polymer material until you get to 70mm and up.

Hope that works.

Yep, I opened the thread, ate breakfast and replied without refreshing.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't it be easy enough to just read the bearing number off the bearing in the pulley you're using now, and just pick up a new one and machine the alt pulley to fit that bearing?

I had a couple Honda timing belt idlers I was hanging onto for Mr Wizardry nonsense I'd been considering, but I looked around the garage and I couldn't find them. Must have gotten sick of moving them around, because they're either in a box somewhere or went in the trash. Figures, things sit around for a few years, you toss them and in a few weeks they might have come in handy.

I would rather have ungated and two bearing
than single bearing.

The accessory right next to his idler location is gated.

Thinking out loud . . .

I tried a non-gated pulley, and the belt walked rearward ad idle and got eaten up. I don't know why.

The gated one has been fine to 6,000 RPM.

Is the pulley completely square? If it's not perpendicular the belt would walk to the low side. I don't mean just square itself but square to the path of the belt. Might be interesting to see if the belt walks the other direction with the pulley flipped 180*.

It should be. The hole I used was for the belt guard bracket. I just enlarged it to 3/8", tapped it, and installed a stud.

If you are proficient with the lathe you may want to consider just buying the bearing and machining the pulley to fit it.
