Saxondale Ever Think On Making The Photo Documentation In Parts.

1984 Z28 Repaint (Part 1)
1984 Z28 Repaint (Part 2)
Etc.
Each Part Would Be A New Thread With About 25-30 Pictures,That Way It Wouldn't Take As Long To Download

I did not think until the other day when I viewed on a phone. Home connection must be relatively fast because it didn't provide a clue. Thanks. Too much to go back and fix.

BTW if a moderator wants to dump the entire thread because of size and server hog that would be fine. Just give me heads up so I don't search for it. Thanks.

Not moving the thread. My recommendation is to view this thread on a computer instead of on the phone.

Most recent photos have been resized to manageable density. But yeah, big files otherwise. Some day these internet speeds will be history and won't be an issue.

Though many random images, I'm hoping people can use them for reference. Many are first-time discoveries for me. Learned how things looked and fastened as the layers came off.

Re: 1984 Z28 Repaint - Photo Documentation (High Res Slow to Download)

Moved it to sunlight this morning for better view. It'll look nice with contrasting color parts and stripes. For St Paul Street Machine Nationals in a couple weeks will be a red shell with added doors, bumpers, lights, handles, and glass. Hoping can add some ground effects, but will not rush because of the event. By 2018 event it should be a finished car, depending on your definition of finished.

Spare NDH gas cap already had overspray from some other car. Original NDH cap is home. But planning to use new GM locking cap.

That turned out great. Has me rethinking what I want to do with my car. I was going to do something kind of elaborate but it looks damn good just red. Can't wait to see it as you put the interior back together.

Th tail lights have always looked good on that car. Only ever received wipe-downs with detailing sprays and microfiber towels. But my days with detail sprays and towels must end. Only soap and water washes from this point forward.

OK, I'll admit, I'm not as "into" all the latest detailing trick, tools, products and what not...there are whole sites for it. That said, my oldest brother has been showing cars and winning trophies for the last 30 years. He has 2 cars that he shows currently, and both are trophy winners. Unless something tragic happens and they get really filthy, he never washes with carwash soap and water. Spray detailer from weekend to weekend, and a good annual wax and detailing.

I'm not suggesting your thinking or approach are wrong. With new paint, and beautiful car to care for, I'm sure you want to be careful to protect them. I would. But why do you think it's only carwash soap and water from now on? Always interested to hear what other people are thinking and doing on this subject.

I only wash my car if it gets dirty, which might be once a year. Otherwise, I use microfiber towels and GarageOne spray wax when it needs a wipe down.

Random photos. Polishing completed.

Carpeting arrived a while back. Looks like it will be a good fit. Color is correct except drivers area vinyl/plastic inserts are black instead of charcoal. Don't have a photo yet.

Outer window sweeps fit well. Sourced from 1A Auto about a year ago. Needed to redrill the passenger door holes because factory did not drill the holes in the 'factory' location. More than half missed the prestamped holes of the window sweeps, as performed by the unqualified careless slob working on that side of the line Monday, June 18, 1984.

Re: 1984 Z28 Repaint - Photo Documentation (High Res Slow to Download)

Been a while since an update. Lot has happened since previous posts. Been cleaning up floors in advance of Dynamat and Dynaliner. Did some dash sound deadening. Installed an old school Hurst Comp Plus shifter. Decided today to work on ground effects. Some of the tan colored stuff coming from rocker cracks is rust-preventive wax sprayed behind panels.

I'm not happy about how low the side ground effect appear to mount on the front fender. The line across the top to the door effects is off a bit. Fender portion is lower. May remove the side emblem to make sure mounting screws are positioned correctly and/or tight enough. Perhaps just the way it will be. But my eye always draws to that slightly lower ground effects. I may get over it as the car comes together. Adding body stripes could even out any perceived alignment issue. The side fender was adjusted slightly to improve the door to fender gap, which might have something to do with it.

I have looked at your thread and interesting to read. The seats are nice, and I wonder if they were sitting after the car was new?or have bought them. Is this an accessory factory?

Re: 1984 Z28 Repaint - Photo Documentation (High Res Slow to Download)

Yes, they were a factory option from 82 through 85. 83 through 85 had the Camaro Camaro Camaro fabric. 82 were more tastefully upholstered. In 82, the passenger seat was still high back, while the drivers seat was low backed and had the adjustments, except for Pace cars which also had a low backed passenger seat.

The Lear Siegler seat option gave the adjustable seat for driver only in the Camaro. I like it the unique style and is a major reason I picked this particular car during my search.

Lear is a company still in the automotive interior business. I don't know when the Siegler name was dropped.

Here is a discussion in the History forum.

As much as I like my car, I'd happily have purchased an 82 with Lear Siegler seat option. Very unique in 82.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...o-conteur.html

The 83 advertisement image is incorrect because it shows the passenger seat is also adjustable. It was not in production cars.

Had to learn butyl rubber techniques. Seems simple, but first time for everything. My body shop guy calls it dumb dumb. The butyl. Less so me, though I've earned it at times during this resto.

Re: 1984 Z28 Repaint - Photo Documentation (High Res Slow to Download)

My experience overall with this car and paint is that modern technology is amazing, but the car loses something without the factory paint. The paint is sometimes too deep.

It was to the point of being necessary due to various rust beneath paint and ground effects, independent of the quarter panel damage. It could have been cleaned up and touched up without a full repaint.

I'm not complaining or wishing it did not get done, but it changes the car. Sort of over-restored. I don't know a way around it other than using different paint, including possibly a single stage.

I like seeing the history of a car. I left a cigarette burn in a back lower seat because of history. I do not plan to over-restore the engine bay. Want to keep as much of the patina that remains. Interior fabric, too. It shows some fading and wear, but it is staying as long as it is serviceable.

The super-deep paint look may lessen or soften with age due to use and micro scratches.

History about the car is fun to search in, can you in the US look for the car to own history?

Fantastic thread and pictures. I appreciate the detail and the car was amazing before the work - it's going to be stellar!!

Thanks. Progress is slow lately. Limited to weekends, and not every weekend is available. Plus, I'm spending more time going for cruises in it than working on it. Making up for the lost several months while it was at the shop. Fun to drive, even without interior, door seals, ground effects, noise insulation. Wear ear plugs. The removed shifter boot has a profound effect in that a LOT of heat comes into the cabin through the open hole, and of course a lot of road noise. Easy to install boot, but not until I clean up the periphery sheet metal.

It is no longer possible to get much detailed historical information other than previous states of registration through services such as Carfax. That is my understanding of it.

I know the history back to mid 1990s, but do not know first owner information.

The build sheet indicates it was built in June 1984 in Van Nuys, California, and sold new in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Since the mid 1990s the car was several different owners in Door County, Wisconsin . The second owner purchased it used from the Chevrolet Dealer in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin (also Door County), so car may have spent entire life in Door County.

Was this car factory red?
I ask because I'm changing a factory black car to red and I noticed the strut adjusters and the cowl area is black. If so, that's two places/parts I don't have to paint.
Thanks

Yes, cowl top and strut mounts should be black. They retain their factory paint as shown in the photos. It's some middle-road black. Not gloss. Not flat. Some here know the name. Maybe simply semi-gloss.

And the bottom of the spare tire well will need to be black on your car, as it is visible below the passenger side rear ground effect. It was black from the factory, but had to be repainted during this project.

On second thought, I'm not sure about that for an '85+ car due to the larger ground effect pieces.

I've been searching and have seen some black, some body color even on the same color cars. Maybe all I've seen body color have been repainted.
So I can leave the cowl and strut area black and be good to go there.

I'll have to look at the rear. Didn't pay attention to that.

Thanks for the headsup
