My Delco Pontiac U1A CD player radio refurbished and installed!

Nothing like a rare and original Delco Third gen CD player in a third gen. I purchased this radio and had it completely refurbished and upgraded with a CD-R drive. I really like the nostalgia of seeing it in my car, completely took my interior to another level.

also interested in knowing who did the conversion, I really want to get an original radio for my car upgraded with a CD player and aux port. I love the classy look that you just don't get with new radios

Re: My Delco Pontiac U1A CD player radio refurbished and installed!

So I found this man in Texas named Craig Kettner who has an extensive collection of old Delco radios. I contacted him and sent him a picture of this radio and asked him if he had any. He told me they're really rare and hard to find. He had two left and he sent me pics of both and the one you see is the one I chose. He then disassembled it, changed all of the back lighting, used the best buttons and ***** he had, refurbished the radio and installed the new CD-R drive. He always communicated well with me and I had the radio in my possession about 2 weeks after I paid for it. I'd highly recommend him. I can find his contact information if anyone wants to contact him.

I agree! Aftermarket radios don't look as cool in a third gen as the original ones do. I love seeing this in my car so much better than the aftermarket deck that was installed in there by the original owner.

Thanks man! Part of my love for third gens is the nostalgia of them. Back in 1992 a factory CD player was a big deal!

Nice I would buy it too if could find one... You said he had two of these, is there any chance to give me contact, like an email or something to ask him. I'm from Europe and here are all radios rare.

I have one of those as well. Mine works great but a couple of buttons have holes in them.

Re: My Delco Pontiac U1A CD player radio refurbished and installed!

Hi Trans Am,

That is a good looking radio. I have a question. you mentioned that it was upgraded with a CD-R drive. Did the radio have a cd drive originally and you updated the mechanism or was the drive installed in the radio which did not have one?

Louis

Hey Louis,

It was an original CD player radio with the drive that gm installed in 90-92. So we swapped that out to a modern CD-R Drive. Works perfect!

Thats awesome!! Keep me posted. As long as he has it, I’d buy it in three years of searching, he was the only person I could find who had this radio and was willing to sell it! I’d say it’ll be somewhere between $325-$400 plus shipping.

This particular unit is definitely the rarest and most valuable third gen F body radio so if you want it I really do think you just have to pull the trigger.

If you contact Craig, he might have some decent used buttons that you can get from him to replace the buttons that have holes on your unit.

Re: My Delco Pontiac U1A CD player radio refurbished and installed!

I just ordered the U1A radio from the same guy. Ill post pics once I get it. I've been needing another Delco unit for my 89 formula since I'm getting a lot of static noise from the factory Delco cassette unit, and the tape deck doesn't work anymore so this should be a nice upgrade unit.
