305TPI to 383carb but I have an electric speedo

Hey guys, I have an 86 305TPI that I'm putting a carb'd 383 into.

everyone says you can just remove the ECM harness when swapping over and just wire up the relay for the fuel pump differently but the wires that run to the VSS for the electric speedo are included in that ECM harness and presumably run to the ECM.

Am I gonna have to swap over to a cable driven speedo to make this happen or should I just leave that ugly harness in the bay?

there's also a two wire connector that connects the engine harness to the ecm harness which I'm assuming is for the distributor which wont matter anymore with the vacuum advanced dizzy I'll be putting in correct?

thanks

post #3 in this thread makes it seem as if I can just separate the speedo wires and yellow VSS box from this harness and computer, is that true or do I need to retain the ecm for it to work?

You can Remove the ecm and use the vss buffer.

When you remove the ECM harness from the passenger side of the car...... You will also be removing the ground connection for the VSS Buffer.

That plug - under the dash on the passenger side of the car, is the C207 connector. When you disconnect the ECM harness you removed the ground for the VSS. ( certain -86-87?- Pontiacs,.... don't think this is a problem with Camaros. ) That connection was @ C207, a Black/White wire on pin 'm'. That's the wire that needs to get grounded in order to get the electric Speedo working again.

Cut that Black/White wire on the dash side C207 connector.

Splice a black wire with an "EYE" at the end to the Black/White wire you just cut off C207.

Screw the new ground wire EYE to the body - anywhere.

VSS Buffer now has ground and should work again.

Also; That 2 wire ENGINE to ECM harness connector; IIRC 1 of those wires is for the oil pressure sending unit. The other wire I'm not so sure about,.... I think it's for AC.

Awesome thanks for the info guys, I’ll dive under the dash after work and try to make sense of it all.
