I need a manifold!

Well I finally got those rusted old manifolds off my L05. I pulled the motor to get these things off. The passenger side bolts and fittings were rusted up pretty good. I broke one bolt off in the head and will probably weld a nut to whats left sticking out to get it out. I also managed to twist the rusted heat shield up and ruined it. On the caprice the smog pump only was plumbed into the passenger side since its a single exhaust. Well the fittings for the air pump tubes were pretty rusted and I managed to break 2 of the fittings off in the manifold. Not sure how I will try to get these out, my best bet would be to find another manifold or grind whats sticking out flat and have someone weld the holes shut. I was planning on getting rid of the air pump anyway.

Oddly there was no gaskets in between the manifolds and the heads. Was that a GM thing or some bozo who worked on it afterwards?

I wish I could afford headers and duals, but right now that is out of my budget.

So anyone got any ideas how to try to get these broken fittings out? What makes them a PITA is the fact that they still have a portion of the tube in there with them, which probably means an easy out wont do it.

If anyone happens to have a passenger side 10108437 manifold and heat sheild (or even a set of manifolds with heatshields) that they would sell for cheap please check my thread in the parts wanted section. This is the same passenger side manifold that came on many, if not all V8 powered 87-92 F bodies

Thanks

you should have used a torch and heated up the iron around the fittings first

you coul have a local shop get them out, or just go to a yard and buy another manifold

or get one from someone on here for around 25 bucks

torch is your best friend when working on iron manifolds

I did use a torch! But all I had was propane, but I did leave it blowing on the fitting while I did other things before I tried to unscrew it. The middle two came out with only a little fuss, those end two just wouldnt loosen.

Get it hotter. Out of the factory there was no gasket between the head and the manifold. Are you going to port those why you have them off?

you have to heat up the manifold iron, not the fitting

heating up the fitting will make it even tighter in the manifold casting

what i do is heat up the manifold iron all around the fitting hole and then pour water on it and real quickly pipe wrench or vice grip the fitting or stud out

i get the iron cherry red bright hot, works great always

the fitting needs to be not hot or it wont work most likely

you could still fix that one if you drill out that fitting to the OD of an 1/8" pipe thread plug and drive the sucker in with a big ford tool, or just weld that shut how it is now

either would work

id go for the latter though
