I know i need a new torque converter after all the mods i did this winter but im not sure what stall speed to get. I put on new heads, headers, cam, lifters, throttle body and a bunch of other stuff. The trans is a 700r4 in an 87 IROC 305 TPI.

What RPM range does you cam and heads pick up at. If its like a 2500-5500 Rpm set. Like Edelbrock's first kit. With carb heads and cam. The get a 2000-2500 RPM converter. If you have went crazy on mods go a little higher in the RPM range.

86 Trans Am 355 TPI Rebuilt 700R4 with Corvette servo, modified valve body, and a B&M Torque Converter (2000 rpm stall w/ lock up), 87 350 block bored .30 with new crank, bearings, rings, and magnafluxed rods. Reworked 305 heads with 3-angle valve job. Added in the rebuild was an SLP TPI cam, BBK 58mm Throttle Body,SVO 24# injectors,MSD 6A, Hypertech Power Coil, 1.5 Crane roller tipped rocker arms, SLP Intake Runners and Port matching in upper intake including fully ported plenum, TPIS adjustable fuel pressure regulator @ 46psi, Hooker shorty style headers w/ Thermotech heat wrapping, Custom 3” exhaust with Flowmaster muffler and chrome quad tips, Hypertech Thermomaster Computer chip, K&N open element cone filter on modified MAF per TPIS specs, MSD Wires, removal of A/C hardware and a 1LE firewall cover installed. Also there has been a PST front suspension kit with Hotchkis strut tower brace

get your car dynoed to see where your peak torque is, then get a stall thats 500-750 rpm lower than that number. if you cant dyno your car its all guesswork then
if you got a performance package like from edelbrock then you can use the chart they gave you

Another WAG is a couple hundred RPM's above the lower end of the cam power range, assuming everything else matches the cam (you don't have 1-3/4" primary headers, by chance?). That sounds like a fairly mild cam, so 1800-2000 would probably do. If you over-did it on the header primaries, or your gears are a low number like 2.73, you could benefit from a higher stall than that.

If you race the car, I'd run as much stall as you can stand. If not, then call a convertor company for a recommendation. For your combo I'd say 2500 and up.

A good rule of thumb is to add 500 rpm to your minimum operating range rpm, and use that as your stall speed.

I have the same exact cam in my new "ZZ4" 350 with Edelbrock Performer heads, Holley 670cfm TBI and SLP 1-5/8" headers. I will soon have a 3.42 gear & Auburn Pro posi.
I chose a Hughes 2200-2500 stall converter based on a recomendation directly from Hughes Performance after I explained my setup to them.

I will give another vote for the 2500 RPM. Thats a good speed where it gets you out of the gate quick with minimal tire spin.
