84 TA, 305 4 barrel, I put a performer intake (2101), 650 holley, 50,000 coil, flowmaster exaust and everything else is stock . Now Im looking for a better cam, i'm hoping for 50 horses more w/ a cam swap.
What kinda specs should I be lookin for? and what kinda lifters?

Thanks, C-ya

50 horses with just a cam, no mods to the heads...no comment.

do a search. If you did, you would have found these:

Without any further info, i cant give a very educated guess, so ill just toss out an idea. Run a solid roller cam with mid .700's lift and 290+° duration @ .050" on a 106° lobe seperation angle.

Give me info about your transmission, rear gears, desired RPM range, budget, any plans for heads, and every other aspect pertaining to your engine and i can give a better suggestion.

The closest thing to an honest suggestion i can give now, other than DO A SEARCH *cough cough* is save up for a 350.

LoL yea, the numbers 350 crossed my mind plenty of times, but i'm trying to keep my mods all bolt on so I can swap them later if needed.

The car got 700r4 (b&m shift kit) and a 2.73 rear end (blah)

Thanks for the help

To get the best results with a new cam you will need to port the heads, upgrade your exhaust ect... Its all about matching the total combination. I was using a Crane 274H cam in my old 305 and running a 13.4 with it. Heres a link to my 305 mods.

You have to completely junk the stock exhaust and start new with headers and a good 3" exhaust system. If you don't swapping a cam will gain 0 hp and will hurt performance. The bottle neck is not the cam right now but the exhaust.

But i would suggest the comp XE262 if you plan on upgrading the exhaust and then maybe the heads.

The XE262 is a bit much for a automatic equiped mild 305. I'd go with the cheap generic 204/214 dur @.050, .420/.442 lift cam Summit and others sell for under $100. It will gain power even with the stock crap exhaust, but to really take advantage of it I'd add at least a cheap set of headers at the same time or as soon as possible. With the other mods you have with the cam in addition to a decent set of headers you'll be making significantly more power than stock... 50 hp gained might be a bit conservative in the end, the stock intake, exhaust, and cam are just that bad...
