Every once in awhile when I cold start my Z, it dies when I put it in to reverse or drive. It just sputters and dies if I don't give it gas. When I let the car idle for awhile and let it warm up it runs just fine. Is this because the rocker arms are too tight? Or could it just be the TPS not giving the motor enough air? Thanks.

I'd say its engine vacuum related. Get a better chip, or adjust your throttle plates and TPS and it should go away.

and it might even be something simple like a tune up part, plugs or filters. i tihnk it's always best to verify you have a good tune up before you go looking else where for a problem.

Mike,

Max and Ed are both correct, and I would follow their suggestions first. I am curious, however, why you think your rockers may be adjusted too tight. Did you recently relash them?

If, by some chance, they are on the tight end, it is possible that vacuum would be low, compression would be low, and you could be doing damage to valves.

Any explanation?

Just a couple of weeks ago I finished my first head and cam swap so basically the plugs, wires, etc... are brand new.

I had those exact same symptoms a couple years ago. Turned out to be a bad pick-up coil in the distributor.
I replaced it and all was well again.
