new fuel pump

has anyone done a fuel pump lately. i went to autozone (hate them), and they said they only sell the pieces, not the entire assembly. somehow needing to re-use the fixed hard lines, assembly, etc, but with new wireing, filter and pump. said the only way to find an assembly is GM....which will be at least $200+. is this true, or is he talking out his ***?

Thats how you're supposed to do it... at least as far as I've ever heard. I did a pump a couple months ago and all I changed was the wiring and cylindrical pump. Not much to go wrong with the rest.

PS - if you're doing stock replacement make sure you get an ACDelco pump.

how much would a delco cost.....airtex was $51 at autozone. this is going into a racecar, supposed to be done on the cheap. if it lasts a year itll be fine with me. you kept the hard lines and everything else?

I paid $100 for a Delco TPI pump.

Yeah..you twist the top locking ring (use a screwdriver and tap hammer) and extract the whole assembly. Remove the old pump and install everything that the new pump comes with onto the assembly. Clean the old giant O-ring off and make sure you don't drop any in the tank. Use the new O-ring that comes with the pump. Carefully put the whole assembly back in the tank and you're done.

I have no comment on using the cheap pumps for short amounts of time. Word is pretty unanimous on these forums that they are garbage, from what I've seen.

Can I assume you're talking about a thirdgen??

I recently replaced, a GM replaced fuel pump in my 92 Z28 but getting that tank in and out is about as easy as pulling the engine out with a tooth pick.

The last AC Delco lasted about two years and the factory about 15 years. I put something from Oreillys in there but it makes a loud hum particularly when warmed up. I dread the thought of putting another one in. Kind of thinking of finding an in-line pump if there is a "next time".

One has to be sure to get the pump set properly into the baffle in the rear of the tank. The entire process sucks!.

As part of the discussion I've seen entire assemblies with the lines and pump included for around $300+ on line.

rockauto has them for 200 and change. im going to try and piece it all together tomorrow. does anything need to be soldered?
