Took my 91 RS in today to get smogged. When it passed and came out, the guy doing the test told me that there was an issue with the fuel inlet. He said he was concerned with how hot it was compared to the rest of the car. He had me feel it, it was definitely hot to the touch. Is this a known issue? He said the exhaust might be routed too close to the tank. The car is bone stock, previous owner was my grandfather, and he put about 200k miles on it with no issue, so I'm not too sure if this is something I should really be concerned with or not. Never heard of this being an issue until today

Um, , , , that would be your "fuel filler neck" , , , , , your gashole ain't something we're gonna be interested in discussing. Or feeling to see if it's too hot......... Or smelling.......

Now, for the serious answer;

Above your muffler, under your fuel tank, there is supposed to be a sheet metal heat shield* that if not in place will cause the fuel tank (and it's filler neck) to get unreasonably warm. Sometimes the shield goes missing when someone replaces the fuel pump (or fuel tank itself) and pulls the ol backyard hack "we don't need this dumb ol heat shield" and doesn't bother to put it back. If my filler neck truly was too hot, that shield would be the first thing I'd be checking to see if it's still in place.

* It's been a long time since I had my fuel tank out, but I seem to recall the heat shield actually being a couple of pieces and not just one piece, but like I said it's been a while..............
