I installed a TPIS ZZ-9 camshaft in my 1986 Corvette and used the stock distributer gear. TPIS told me it would work fine with their camshaft. I have just removed the distributer after 3000 miles and the distriuter gear is worm pretty badly. What gear am I suppossed to use with the roller camed engines. I was going to purchase a new gear from a 1987 or newer Vette or F-body. Will this solve my problem? Is the high volume oil pump causing the excessive gear wear or is there a compatability problem?

Thanks

Should just be a stock gear with that cam, unless otherwise specified. A melonized gear is used in stock roller engines. That pump can put more stress on the gear, how come you're using it?

How does the melonized gear differ from the gear on my 1986 Corvette? I am using the high volume pump for added insurance that I will have enough volume to generate 60 PSI at 6500 RPM.

Distribuer gear
I had the same problem with a SLP cam . I had to go with a bronze gear it solved the problem . The bronze gear has about 4000 miles on it with no problems or wear . I took it out to inspect for wear after it was in for about 3000 miles . I also have a high volume oil pump . Hope this helps .

The 86 gear should be melonized. It's my understanding that all factory roller engines came with that gear on the distributor. Could just have been an old worn gear and a new cam causing it to wear quickly. Bronze distributor gears are used because they're softer than the cam gear and they will wear out before it does, since it's easier to change the distributor gear than the cam.
