race 700r4...2-3 band shot?

Had a question for you guys.

I have a 91 formula with a 406 motor coupled to a 700r4.

The problem I am having is that when the car shifts at the track, 1-2 happens no problem at around 6000 and is a quick shift (not snappy, but firm) the 2-3 shift starts to happen around 6400-6500 and is a little more mushier. It seems like the motor is revving up while the shift is happening beause it is hitting the 7000 rpm rev limiter.

Is this a sign that the 2-3 band is going? The fluid is redline synthetic and is still pinkish and clear. No burnt smell to it at all.

I have tried adjusting the TV cable, HOWEVER, for some reason it does not always adjust right. I tried replacing it once already. It seems that the swing of the lever on the throttle body is weird because I have to pull the cable back and clamp it in place on order for it not to click forward and turn the shifts to tapioca.

The way I have it adjusted now, the 1-2 shift on the street is ok and the 2-3 is a little softer but ok. The problem is at high rpm with slicks at the track.

Thanks guys

With the 2-3 shift the band comes off and the 3/4 clutch pack applies. A larger 2nd apply servo may help. If not then Sonnax makes a part that goes into the 2nd release feed bore to the servo. It restricts the oil flow causing 2nd to come off later. Opening the 3rd apply may also help.

Or it just may be that the 3/4 clutch packs are on the way out.

I really hope the 3-4 bands are not on their way out....that would really frost my ***. This is a brand new trans.

tv valve actuator spring
You might want to make sure that your tv valve actuator spring (the spring behind the plunger of the tv system that actually actuates the valve upon throttle opening) hasn't shrunk from millions of cycles.. I was having similar adjustability problems on my new raptor 700r4 until I got a new spring installed (there was a noticable difference in spring length (1/8" to 1/4", didn't measure exactly). What happens is that the cable is adjusted properly (the tv plunger is completely buried at WOT), but the amount of "influence" that the valve has at all points throughout the throttle range is decreased because that shorter spring won't engage the valve as much. This makes adjusting the bloody trans hard as hell because you have to adjust the cable farther to get the shifts right, but when you do that and then hit WOT it will want to ratchet out because it hits the end of tv plunger travel prematurely... I hope I'm explaining this in enough detail. I don't know offhand who makes a tv correction kit (there are some available, I got mine with the TV-Made-EZ kit for edelbrock carbs from bowtie overdrives--nice kit btw), maybe someone else knows where to get the spring, etc?

Hope this helps.. Ever since I put in the fresh tv spring, my trans shifted perfectly and consistantly...

The "modified" Trans-Go Performance Shift kit (larger boost valves, Corvette servo) will solve this in most cases. If you do not already have the Corvette servo?, you could try this and install the larger boost valves, but if you are going this far, add the complete kit "if" the transmission is still in good condition.

I am assuming all this stuff is already in there. This a Level10 trans supposedly able to hande 800HP. Cost me like $1600 to get everything done.....

Is there anything else that could cause this without taking the trans apart to look for problems?
