All of the B&M ratchet shifters I've seen are 3 speeds, is there a part number for a 4 speed or am I just out of luck?

The B&M console megashifter that is made for our cars is a 3 or 4 speed shifter.

What happens if you are in first and you go back again? Nothing if there isn't another gear? Does it come wth the right plate? Thanks alot!

Also, isn't the megashifter non-ratcheting?

The Megashifter is definately a ratchet shifter (I've got one); it comes shipped to work on a 3 speed transmission. To use it on the 4-speed 700r4 or 200-4R, you remove a bolt that blocks off the 4th position.

The Megashifter comes with two clear indicator plates; the 1-2-3-N-R-P plate is installed, and the 1-2-3-4-N-R-P plate comes in the box and is easy to swap in/out.

Should be able to find more info at http://www.bmracing.com ...

In fact, here's the link to the Megashifter, click on the directions for the 82-92 install (that's cool they put that up!) and the 3 speed/4 speed info is in the very first paragraph. http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id...subcat=1&pid=8

you'll have to buy the right plate as it comes with a 3spd plate from the factory. not too bad though.

if you get one in hand, you'll see what i mean

Quick Silver and Pro Ratchet are 2 others and both are very good shifters. I'm partial to the Pro Ratchet since I have one and have driven alot of buddies cars that have the quick silver (since they're so cheap) and the pro ratchet is much easier to use and does not get stickey like the quick silvers do after being in the car for awhile.

I also use a Pro Ratchet.

There's a lockout pin in the shifter. When the pin is removed, it allows you to use 4 gears. There are 2 other holes to install the pin in. One is for use with a 3 speed, the other is for a powerglide. Using the lockout pin prevents you from trying to ratchet the shifter down another gear when there isn't that other gear in the tranny. This prevents you from damaging anything. There are other things in a kit that make the shifters different. How the cable bracket installs on the tranny depends on what tranny is in the car. They don't all have the same oil pan bolt pattern so there's a few variations of brackets. If the shifter says it's designed for a 700R4 or just a GM 4 speed then it will have the proper hardware.

A universal shifter will come with a bunch of different shift pattern decals to install on the shifter depending on how many gears you have and if the tranny is a forward or reverse shift pattern. Forward pattern is PRND21. When I had a TH400, I had a reverse pattern valve body. The shift pattern was PRN123. From neutral, pulling back once put me into first gear. I had to pull back to upshift through the gears. This means the only way I was able to shift to neutral then reverse was to slow down and downshift through the gears.

Thanks, I had no idea those megashifters were ratchets! My friend must have just put the handle on his non-ratcheting shifter I suppose. Thanks guys!
