i blew my trans and now i cant tell whether my other trans is a 30 spline or a 27 spline there are 2 cogs on the input shaft and i dont know wich one to count i've counted both of them but i've gotten very different numbers both times it is definitly a 700r4 its was out of an 86 z28 but i dont know if it was a frankenstein car so just need a little help

86 is the break year. - probably a 27 spline, but counting is the only way to know. - The smaller, furthest out shaft is the input shaft. If you look, you'll realize that the other shaft cannot turn, it simply holds the stator in the converter.

84 1/2 was the break on 700r4 input spline count increase
most late 84 ones were 30
and 86 is definitely 30
on the stamping code on the flat pad on the tranny side the first digit is a number
it is the last digit of the year of the tranny
if the code starts with 6 then it is 86 or 96
86 was the last year before the aux valve body addition and other good changes, and the addition of the "rainbow" casting line over the cooler line fitting port area of the tranny casting
i think you are confusing years
good luck

where exactly would the stamping code be and is it a sticker and also would it be worth it to build a 700r4 thanks

its stamped into the case along the pan rail, no, not a sticker. - A 700r is buildable to take high hp. It can be more expensive than other auto trans' to build, so intended use is what decides whether or not its worth it. where exactly would the stamping code be and is it a sticker and also would it be worth it to build a 700r4 thanks
