i just bought a case of Chevron Automatic Transmission Fluid, thinking it was Dexron III (because thats the only atf the store carried before) when i got home it says its MD-3 Formulated with ISO-SYN technology, is that the same as Mercon/Dexron III, just an abrieviation? The back of the bottle says its a passenger car and light truck atf for most pre-2006 transmissions built by GM, Ford, and other makes requiring a high performance, multi-purpose, power transmission fluid. but says nothing about Mercon/Dexron III

Also.... is Chevron a good brand of atf for a street/strip transmission built by ProBuilt Automatics?

Like Dexron and Dexron II, Dexron III is going to be phased out. At work we just got a bulletin about the newest vehicles requiring Dexron VI. If you use Dexron III in them, you'll void the warranty. Dexron VI is backward compatible and can be used in older vehicles requiring older grades of Dexron.
Not sure of the cost of Dexron VI yet or if it's even carried at local auto parts stores yet.

i understand that Dexron is backward compatible but was unsure of this md-3 fluid because it gave no designation of dexron on it. my local Kragen Autoparts carries Dexron VI for $5.99 a quart or 69.99 a case of 12. but i got this md-3 for $19.99 for a case of 12. Thanks for clearing things up for me.
Normally when looking in the auto parts store for ATF, you're going to have 2 choices. Dexron III or equivalent and type F which is still available. The racers still like type F because it has better friction modifiers and better holding power for the clutches. Dexron III makes the shifts softer and feel mushy.
If it's ATF and it doesn't say type F on the bottle, assume it's Dexron III
