What's a better way to go for new ratio: ring and pinion or just swap rear end?

I've been thinking about replacing the 2.93 gear, (posi, 4 wheel discs) in my '83 for a 3.23 or 3.42.
It almost seems cheaper to find a complete rear end with the above ratios and swap them rather than replacing the ring and pinion and carrier in my current one.
Thoughts?

That's probably true.
Consider a 4th gen rear. That'll get rid of those terrible 83 disc brakes. You'd just have to deal with the different lines, like I did in my 83 (car has SAE, rear will have metric) and put a 83 drum MC & combo valve in it; or, change the entire system over to metric (84-up).
