Hey fellas I have an 89 Iroc. I dropped in a 383 last year and recently my T5 went BANG. (With the motor running and the clutch pedal in, when attempting to get into ANY gear, I am met with nasty grinding).
My plan is to get a replacement T5 that will last until I have enough cash saved up for a T56 swap. Should I have my T5 rebuilt for $800 or should I try to score on a used T5 somewhere for $300??
Any other general tips for me??
Thanks guys....

If you are saving for a T56 swap then don't rebuild your T5.
Just get a used one from the classifieds to get you by and take it easy.

I'm gonna hit up the junkyard tomorrow in hopes of finding a T5. I'm obviously looking for a T5 that came from a V8, but must it be an Iroc? Or can I get a T5 from an RS or a regular Z28?
Also, what tips can you give me about spotting a "working" T5 at a junkyard??

im pretty sure you cant use the V6: the v8s are 28 spline and the v6 are 18. Or vice versa...but they are def different. Their all over ebay and craigslist. Id go with a hydrolic throwout while your at it. you could use it on the t56 when you swap over.
check this out a entire t56 setup for 600. Id go for that- skip the whole t5

Note that you may have to swap the drive and/or driven gears from your current trans to the 'new' one in order for the speedo to read correctly.
