Its still tech, and I like you guys way better than the idiots over at CamaroZ28.com (who manage to grenade their 4L60E's and blow their LT1s every chance they get), so here goes...

Ever since I got my Z28 in March with 40k miles, every so often when shifting from 1st to 2nd, when I push the clutch in I will hear a very slight "clunk" coming from the rear end. Can I assume the U-joints are just a little noisy?? I changed the rear end and tranny fluid at 42k with Redline Synthetic, and the rear end showed virtually no signs of wear...

Just sorta curious what this noise may be. I mean, with 44k on it I would hope everything was flawless, but this car was not "Grandma Driven"...while the body and interior are absolutely brand new (body shows absolutely no signs of collision), when I saw it on the dealer's lot it had blackouts over the foglights, a cheesy Pioneer CD player, and because it was a damp night, the condensation on the back window revealed the outline of a sticker that used to be on the window...it was a big bow tie with "Eat'n Fords" over it and "Sh*t'n Dodges" under it. Naturally, Grandma would never stand for such language

So while the engine burns no oil, runs flawless, the tranny and clutch are perfect, and the rear end shows no signs of beating, could it be possible that in the process of eating a few too many Fords the previous owner wore the U-joints a bit???

Thanks for any help, and sorry for the novel

Sure could, BUT, I'd look for other clues, too.
Exhaust loose and clunking
Sway bar
Shocks
Look for shiny marks underneath.
Those are your clues.
Like you, kinda doubt it's the rear gears.

Well, I noticed today it makes the same noise over railroad tracks when going 10-15 MPH over them, in gear. My uncle said there are links that occassionally come loose in the rear ends on these (he's a mechanic), but I'll be damned if I can remember which ones they were now!!

Supposedly all I need are some bolts tightened...thanks KED85!

your uncle a mechanic?
take him for a ride try to duplicate the noise (rr tracks go over), then take car to his shop.
it certainly could be a few loose bolts
hope so!!

Check you tranny mount and check the yoke for any play in it
