rear disc brakes on a Trans Am?

today in my work's parking lot, I spotted a red Trans Am (non- GTA) roll up. I walked over after the owner left to look at the car. I didn't think that "regular" trans ams had rear discs but maybe I was wrong. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to look at the VIN # to see what the engine was but it was a standard tranny and it didn't say any engine markings on the exterior. It had the black GTA style wheels but it had the Trans Am vents on the front fenders. Is this an unusual car?

Nothing special, perfectly normal. My 86 TA has them on all four corners and I believe it was an option on all TA's/Formulas and stock on GTA's

Disc brakes were optional on all cars with L69 and LB9 engines, and standard on L98 engines (except during the shortage of 1991). Disc brakes in general are a rare option, because most thirdgens have drums.

I may have to post my list again...

Some of the WS6 cars it came part of the package... so I guess you could call that optional but so is a L98 except on the GTA.

if you have a ws6 you get 4 wheel disc. I looked into the ws6 package deeply.

If you got the WS6 you didnt automatically get the rear disk , it was an option you had to check off ,most of the time it seemed as if it was a standard pakage with Ws6 but it wasnt , . so it was not standard with WS6. rear disk also came on firebird SE cars

In 1985, the rear disk option was included with the WS-6 package. It does have it's own RPO

I'll testify to that, a good friend of mine owns an '85 T/A, LG4, WS6 and no rear disks.
I also found one myself when I was F-body shopping.

The 85 WS6 package included rear discs. If the car didnt have them, they were either removed or GM ran out like they have in the past.

Heres the list:

82:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
32mm front swaybar
21mm rear swaybar
Limited slip rear differential
4-wheel disc brakes
15"x7" Turbo cast aluminum wheels
P21565R15 Eagle GT's(subject to availability)
Notes: WS6 required on CFI TA's

83 on't know

84:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
32mm front swaybar
23mm rear swaybar
4-wheel disc brakes
15"x7" Hi-Tech cast aluminum wheels
P21565R15 Eagle GT's(subject to availability)
Notes:Required with HO V8, requires ordering Limited-slip rear differential. Specific springs come as part of package.

85:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
Gas-pressurized shocks
36mm front swaybar
24mm rear swaybar
4-wheel disc brakes
16"x8" Hi-Tech cast aluminum wheels
P24550VR16 Eagle GT 'Gatorback'(subject to availability)
Notes:Specific springs come as part of package. Swaybar sizes per part listing, not published information, besides thats what my stock 85 had on it

86:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
Gas-pressurized shocks
Special springs and bushings
36mm front swaybar
24mm rear swaybar
4-wheel disc brakes?
Limited slip rear differential
16"x8" Hi-Tech cast aluminum wheels
P24550VR16 Eagle GT 'Gatorback'(subject to availability)
Notes:Have seen 4-wheel discs as being included and not being included, which also includes or excludes limited slip rear differential. Swaybar sizes per part listing, not published information, besides thats what my stock 86 has on it

87:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
Gas-pressurized shocks
Special springs and bushings
36mm front swaybar
24mm rear swaybar
16"x8" Cast aluminum wheels
P24550VR16 Eagle GT 'Gatorback'(subject to availability)
Notes:Rear discs not part of WS6, mandated with the 350 TPI option. This then required the purchase of the Limited-slip rear differential as well. Purchase of TPI engine requires purchase of WS6.

88:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
Gas-pressurized shocks
Special springs and bushings
36mm front swaybar
24mm rear swaybar
16"x8" Cast aluminum wheels
P24550VR16 Eagle GT 'Gatorback'(subject to availability)
Notes:Rear discs not part of WS6, mandated with the 350 TPI option. This then required the purchase of the Limited-slip rear differential as well.

89:
12.7:1 quick ratio steering
Gas-pressurized shocks
Special springs and bushings
36mm front swaybar
24mm rear swaybar
16"x8" Cast aluminum wheels
P24550VR16 Eagle GT 'Gatorback'(subject to availability)
Notes:Rear discs not part of WS6, standard with the 350 TPI option. This included the Limited-slip rear differential as well. Purchase of TPI engine requires purchase of WS6.

90, 91, 92:
Have no idea.

Not sure about the oil cooler or aluminum driveshaft, although its not a part of the WS6 and I think both first came out in 88 following the change to serpentine.

This may help with the engine oil coolers. All L98 cars had them.
