anyone with a Vette rear end on their 3rd gen??
ok...my friend has all kinds of parting vettes...Lets say he has a vette rear end for me. whats involved in putting that thing on? also will steve spohn suspension parts work with it? i have a A4 90 maro RS, drum brakes out back, 2.73 or something. let me know what im getting into pleez. i originally wanted to go with a disc brake thirdgen rear end....but then thought....if im gonna do a rear end swap might as well get the vette independent one. also....is it the same width as 3rd gen...will it fit the same wheels as my current rear end. i know some guys fit on 11s in the back and that was my plan....will it work with the vette one?? thanks

I've never done it, but I know it's been done before. It's going to be seriously non-trivial though. Some major fabrication is going to be required.
Independent rears suck for drag racing. So, if that's what you want to do w/ the car you'll regret it. The G-Trac steeda's have them and I see Honda's spank them out of the hole. But, they're awesome on "street course" type races. Also, you don't see that at all at the track on the big boys' cars

As stated above, an independent rear suspension is good for road course type racing. Drag racing is better with a solid axle and ladder bars or a 4 link system.
NHRA rule book:
Cars running 10.99 or quicker that weigh more than 2000 pounds with independent rear suspension without upper and lower control arms must replace swing axle differencial with conventional differencial housing assembly. Example 1963-1982 Corvette.
So other than having to have axleshaft safety loops installed (another part of the rulebook), you can use it until the car goes quicker than 10.99 or you can lighten the car to below 2000 pounds.

Best results before the 383 blew up
Best ET on a time slip: 11.857 altitude corrected to 11.163
Best MPH on a time slip: 117.87 altitude corrected to 126.10
Altitude corrected rear wheel HP based on power to weight ratio: 476.5
Best 60 foot: 1.662
Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

So i guess my best bet would be to grab a third gen disc brake axle....i mean i dont NEED a new rear axle but disc brakes sound really nice right about now. When i go to the yard, what years/models am i looking for...i heard some V6 firebirds had good gearing...GTAs? i dont know. help me out guys...also how much should i look to spend on the axle. with / without rotors/calipers? thanks

This guy has done it before. He was trying to get more interest in developing a kit that would allow you to bolt in a C4 Vette IRS but never did.
