Finished painting my fiberglass hood. This is my design hood with 2" cowl induction following the lines of the z-28/iroc inserts. Hood is made with 2 pieces (inner/outer), carbon fiber inside scoop, and embedded machined aluminum for standard hinge, latch and spring mounting. Also made more clearence for the air box. Air box can be expanded an 1 1/2" taller which will allow double the air flow. Next thing I am tooling is the insert nose piece (IROC/fog lamps removed) with air channels directly into the air filter box.

That's great workmanship. You should consider mass producing them. I think they look great. Although I have a Trans-AM and it would be out of place on my car, I am glad to see another alternative to regular cowl hoods. Which I am not fond of. I like the Jongbloed hood, the SS hood and the one you've got alot better.

That hood looks sweet.......... Very nice job......Did u ever consider painting the ground effect the same red as the red on the hood??? I think that would make it standout a little more.......But again awesome job on the hood.......I like the idea of mass producing it hahaha

Yes, I can build more. I am trying to get a patent before I let any of them
go, probably impossible. I don't want to mass produce; the hood is hand
laminated with a laminated foam core between the outer and inner part. This is not a sweat shop chopper gun build. It takes an experienced fiberglass person to construct it properly. The hood only weighs 45 lbs. and is as strong as the steel hood but 20 lbs. lighter. On the inside of the hood where the scoop is, there is a carbon fiber laminate with a clear finish.
My plan is to have two versions, the one you see here which opens like a stock hood, and another that opens reverse like a Corvette. I am working on that version now which requires custom hinges, latching, and a new inside piece to handle the different mounting locations needed.
I do plan on adding burgandy/red trim down the side of the car about where the IROC decal was. Or, more like 3-4 colors of neon tubes starting behind the front wheels and twisting up and over the rear wheels. I had a 67' Camaro back in the late 80's I did that to, it was completely original looking.

very sweet!! I saw the hood scoop in superchevy about 2 mins ago and thought about welding the first gen z28 hood on... and the stripes look soooooo 80's!!!

 

I like it, but it would look 100 times better with heritage stripes.

Finally had time to paint the rest of my IROC. Decided to paint stripes on the rear deck lid like some of you suggested.
I've attached some more pics. Molds for hood are done as well.

I would like to ask if you think I should make a 4" cowl also. Seems like a lot of people are interested in taller scoops.

instead of custom hinges, ever consider the reverse style hinges like some buicks had?

You are correct about not having to make custom hinges. I found very easy to use hinges on a Jag late model XJ6 that will work well. But I don't know how many can be found in junk yards, or how expensive new ones cost from a Jag dealer.

Buick? OK, what year and model has reverse open hoods? Let me know and I'll take a look at them.

I believe the 80's LeSabre had them.

 

I can tell you for a fact that the 80's lesabre up to atleast 85 didnt, because i currently own an 85, and have previously owned an 83....maybe one in late 80's or early 90's?

im not a buick expert, so i donno any exact years... i only know about the hood from working on them....

From the picture, it looks like the hinges won't work on a 3rd gen. When open the hood moves down too far and would hit the nose of a third gen. I'm still going to research it though.

i think if the hinge was closer to the front of the car, you wouldnt have that problem.... well with a camaro... if its for a bird, thats not going to work.

Not to impose on you, but you do have plans to make this right? The hood looks great and Id love to have one! Looks really good on your car. I wish I had the resourses to make my own. Very good!

 

Hood looks great. Maybe you could use hinges from the Nissan Z cars? I had an 82 280ZX that opened reverse like that. Just something to look at.
