Re-wiring Fuel Pump Relay
Hey Guys,
Recently switched from TPI to CARB on my 86 IROC (too many MAF headaches, and too little time to deal with them), and was encouraged by the guys over at Summit Racing (tech) to keep my stock 'in tank' electric fuel pump....
I already equipped the motor with the necessary AFPR from Mallory, and am waiting to set fuel pressure.... but this won't happen until I reroute the Fuel Pump Relay to give the electric pump some juice to work.
Now, I was told to splice one of the fuel pump relay's wires to a 12 volt source (most likely it will be the HEI ignition), but am unsure of which wire to splice into (from the relay, as there's five wires to choose from, and I'm guessing it will be one of the thicker orange ones).....
Did anyone do a similar swap, and if so, how did 'you' rewire the fuel pump relay up? Any feedback would be appreciated, and thanks!

I did and I beleive it was a green wire with a white stripe. I know for sure it wasnt a orange wire. I think there is a brown, black, orange, green with white stripe and maybe another wire or two.
I am almost positive it is the green wire with the stripe. At least on the 92 wiring harness.

1986 Color Code (Fuel Pump Relay)
Thanks Bro,
The color coding on the Fuel Pump Relay from left to right (on my 86) is Orange, Orange, Black and Blue.
Do you by any chance recall the wire's thickness (the one you spliced into).... and if possible, where it was positioned in the connector?
Thanks again....

Im not sure. I have the wiring diagram in my chilton and haynes manual. If you do not find out which one, I will check and see.
I hooked mine into the 12v source at the windshield wiper motor. It works and is on a fuse. Although I plan on running a toggle switch to it later. you should be able to find a better source.
I would guess it is the blue wire for you. I dont think it is the orange. I will check and see when I get a chance.

I agree with you in that it's probably the blue wire. The two orange wire's are a much thicker gauge. I'm far from an expert, but I'm assuming that the black wire in the Fuel Pump Relay is the pump's ground.
Which 'should' make the blue wire the correct one <crossing fingers>...
Thanks for helping me with this bro!!!!

Just locate your fuel pump relay on the firewall beside the brake booster. There should maybe be 3 relays.
If you povide a 12v source to the right wire on the fuel pump relay, you will be fine. Just make sure it is only on when the key is on. Otherwise install a toggle switch.
