Guaging interest for LED tailight and dash kits

Hello everyone. I'm thinking of making drop-in kits for LED taillights and LED dashes. As you probably know, I have both on my car. For the dash, I will provide semi circular boards that have the LEDs already soldered to them that you would be able to drop in behind the guages (90-92 models), making it very easy to install. For the people that don't have white guages, I can make boards with red, purple, white, green, orange or blue LEDs. The most popular seems to be the indiglo look of the blue LEDs.
I will have to get a 82-89 dash and see if I can make a kit that fit them easily. Don't know about the firebird dashed yet, but I think they're all backlit correct ?

As far as the tailights that will require dissamble of the tailight. Then all that would be required is for you to drop in the two board with LEDs for the brake/parking lights and the turn signals. These would be very bright, never burn out, and give you the nice, exotic look you've probably noticed on the new Cadillacs and Mercedes cars.

If anybody is interested please let me know what a fair price would be to charge for these kits or what you would be willing to pay.

Here's some pics of the dash and tailights to give you an idea of what they would look like.

id be very interested in both , particularly the taillights, because they would be perfect since my tails are blacked out. im not really sure what a fair price would be, i guess depending on cost of materials and labor will be the easiest way to determine your price, i would pay like around $50 for a kit to do the tail lights , and probably the same for the gauges, also i dont know what time/money its costing you but thats just what i think would be reasonable.

Well parts and materials will cost me around 80 dollars for the 90-92 dash as for the tailights about 100 (LOTS more LEDs). If anybody wants to send me an old 82-90 dash and some old firebird tailights for me to take measurements and "practice" on I would appreciate it and they would be the first person to have the kit installed on that dash / tailight.

how the hell did you get them to shine through the dash in blue? I put blue bulbs in my dash, but it shines green cause of the yellow on the numbers.

The APC stuff is really week. They use what... 5 or 6 LEDs ? I used about 50 ? lol The only place those work great in is the front fenders as 198 bulb replacements. They use 4 leds and they do a very good job.

The MAIN reason I did my tailights is because I love the very quick on an off times compared to regular bulbs. I'm sure some of have noticed that on the new Caddys with the huge tailights. It just STANDS OUT !! The fact that they got a lot brighther was an added benefit.

As far the guage LEDs they actually look A LOT better in person. If someone wants to send me a regular 82-89 dash I will do the conversion for them and will only charge a small labor fee on top of cost of parts. Same thing with the tailights. Shoot me an email and we can work out the details.

I'm curious, what do the taillights look like when the brake lights are not on? Do you achieve the brightness of the brake lights with brighter LED's or do you use the same type, but more of them? I have noticed the new Cadillac lights and I like them because they have no "hot spot", and as you mentioned, no incandescent filament delay.

I have three "modules" behind each brake lens on each side. If you notice on IROC tailights there's three red rectangles. When I turn the parking lights on, only the middle module lights up at half the power. When the brakes come on ALL three modules light up at full power.

Please post what you found out with the firebirds. I would love to see what it looks like. Along with the tail lights. But by the looks of this board you might be backed up for a while. Ever think about starting your own bussiness???

A lot of people have emailed me about making the dashes or tailights for them. Right now I'm in the process of designing the circuit boards for an easy and professional installation. My dash and tailights are a "one time" thing and they're not exactly profesional looking. I didnt care because nobody could see the work behind them. As soon as I make these boards I will let everyone know.

my one curiousity, can the brightness of the gauges be changed? I know there were sometimes that I had to turn down my guage lights, and if the LED's are even brighter, I dont know.

Damm, this was brought back from the dead.

i was about to trade some work( I do powdercoating) for a set of leds for my 92Z.

long story short. I almost coated my brackets and shiped em while he built the led's for me. Im glad I didnt. I havent heard back from him in months.

I dont think you can adjust the leds. I belive you just have to buy the might ones based on how bright you want em.

The Tech Article on the site talks about how if you go with lower-power LED's, you might have to run two in each socket. I suppose that you could do that, but complicate the process quite a bit and actually wire it as two different sets of LED's and add a second switch somewhere for the second set. So you could have your gauge at full brightness (both sets on) or at half brightness (with the second set turned off), depending on what you needed. Of course, I'm sure you'd have to do this yourself... I can't imagine anyone going to all that effort for something that isn't going into their own car. I wouldn't

You can dim LEDs, although they are much more sensitive to voltage than a standard light bulb. You'd probably have to swap out the factory dimmer for a variable resistor that wouldn't be as drastic of a voltage drop. I haven't done the LED dash yet, but I have put LEDs in other places in my car. And it seems that the easiest way to do it, is to get the proper resistor to drop whatever your car's operating voltage is to whatever voltage the LED is designed for (usaully in the 4.5-5 volt range). Then cut off the longer lead on the LED almost to the base and then solder the resistor onto it. But keep in mind that LEDs (especially blue ones) can be quite expensive. They're coming down in price, but it's still like $1.50 each. You're probably looking at $20-30 to do the dash.

Check out this site for a gage on how much you should charge (for electronic products)...

These are really cool items here... but no bright LED stuff...
