Im in the processss of installing mine to.
You have to drill new hole for the dash in the fire wall to get the rest of the bolt in.
Its normal for there to be a 1'' gap on the drivers side and sit fine on the pass.
Youll have to modfy the a/c ductin to the heater box. Either useing the old ductin or new. Search and youll see how other have done it.
Just got all my headlights etc.. working today. Ill find my wire diagrams I used and let you know about the pop up lights when I find them among my mess of papers.
The trunk I don't know about yours? my 3rdgen only had two wires so mine was easy.
The guages are easy. If you need info on them let me know.

All right. heres the diagrams I used. they are for a '95 Bird but I used them to hook up my headlights, fog, and dimmers for my 2000 switches. may be a little different from yours, but just look at the functions of the wires and color wont matter. The popup function should be the yellow wire on the 4thgen headlight wire. split it into 2 before the healight dimmer switch, 1 to the switch the other to the healigh motors. As long as you know the functions of the 3rdgen wires it should be easy following these diagrams.

i think i know where the prob is on your headlamp doors... you have a door modual that has a white wire...and starting in 90 and up they switched from a white wire lead out of the headlight switch to using the brown parking lamp wire... i think the best way to fix your problem would be to get the headlamp door modual from a 90 or newer bird. i can not see any way to get the correct signal to your modual you have now without doing that... you need a hot at all times fee to the white wire only when the lights are off... and the yellow wire is for when the headlights are on... everything else on your modual is the same as the newer ones... let me know what you plan on doing and ill look some more on what might work...
for your hatch release if you havnt got it working yet
you need to hook the black/white from 4th gen to 3rd gen blk/wht
blk from 4th gen goes to blk 3rd gen ground the others are for relay and hatch motor... let me know if you need more help on that
