Spring Choices

So I want to replace the front coil springs but there are so many choices based on engine size, type of trans, with or with out a/c, heavy duty, standard duty, wheel size, variable rate, constant rate, trans am, formula, base model etc...

What spring should I be putting in a 91 Vert that came stock with a 5.0 TBI that I then swapped in a 5.7 TPI and then deleted the AC. The vehicle came stock with 15" wheels but i switch to 16" WS6 wheels although at some point I may put the AC back in the car....

any advise appreciated

Re: Spring Choices

Im sure you have seen it around the forums, but if you are so concerned about the exact details of how you want your car to sit, save the headache and get Ground Control Weight Jacks. That way, you can use a spring setup for what youd like to do with the car (stiff rates for track car, softer for a daily) and then have it sit where you want it.

Re: Spring Choices

why does with or with out ac matter in terms of which spring to buy? the options is what i dont understand. like im fine with how the car sits now. but if im changing springs do i choose the options the car was originally built with or what it has now? are they different for a convertible?

i once saw a third gen that had must of had the wrongs springs on it once and teh nose was way to high off the ground. i guess that what im trying to avoid

Re: Spring Choices

The short answer is that you want the Moog 5662 for the front end.

The long answer is that while they say that different cars (different transmission, different wheels, A/C or no A/C) all need different springs, the truth of the matter is that it mostly comes down to V6 vs V8 engine. The V8 weighs more and thus needs a stronger spring. The 5662 springs have a 748 lb per inch specification. Factory V8 F-bodies probably came in the range of 500ish lbs. V6 F-bodies are more in the 300 lb range.

Regardless of what your car was originally, you currently have a V8 convertible. Convertibles usually weigh more than coupes. But no A/C cuts down on weight. Let's call it a wash. Your car is basically the same weight as my car (V8 coupe with A/C). I run the Moog 5662 in my car. It measures about 27 to 27.5 inches from ground to wheel well fender lip.

Camaros weigh less than Firebirds.
Lightweight hoods and aluminum heads weigh less than stock.
Springs that are indexed wrong during install can have odd heights.
Any of the three will result in different heights.

hellz_wings' 86 IROC (heights)
LF 28.5 RF 28

My 89 GTA (heights)
LF 27.3 RF 27.5

Both of us have the exact same Moog 5662. But hellz_wings' car is a lighter weight Camaro. I think he has aluminum heads too.
