Re: oil filters! which is best!
Napa/Carquest is valvoline, the napa oil isn't purple just the can is or maybe it was blue I dont remember the bottle just looks cool lol. Look on the back they both say ashland, kentucky. My friend that works at valvoline told me this, only plant in ashland is the valvoline plant.

Anyone ever hear of Frantz? A remote mounted filter that uses a toilet paper element. My father used to sell them back in the 70's.

If you don't like the color of a Purolator Pure1, just buy the Bosch Premium. They're supposedly the same filter. Unless you don't like black either.

The STP is the worse one out there, Id use a fram before it, I had an stp fail on me causing dry starts.
If you want the deal from autozone, buy the oil and filter then take the filter back without a receipt and get the store credit and buy the filter you want. I do it all the time.

Is this the sale you were talking about? Not a bad deal, but thats about what I pay for a napa gold from napa, and 5qt jug of mobile one at walmart; both at regular price.
I was blessed by being the only member of famly that has any idea how to do anything to a car. Because of this I have roughly 8 vehicles that I get to maintain, so I buy a lot of oil from walmart and filters by the case at napa. I'm lucky in the filter dept, 5 of the 8 cars use the same filter.
I hate walmart, but they do have good prices on oil.

Royal Purple. One of the best. BUT once you go purple you cant go back. muhahah. cost close to 90 bucks for 12 qt and 20 bucks for the filter. I encourage anyone to watch the production line for Royal Purple, the best in the business. many sure quality test and almost double the bursting pressure than fram. the BMW of oils. but heres a SEMA 09' CLIP of the Purple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-7Acoo2Wb8 Amsoil is good oil.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
yeah thats the one, i picked it up today, that and some brake fluid, i was almost dry, took the entire bottle, i couldnt change my oil because sadly my car sank into the ground out back so next week when i get it moved onto the driveway ill get it jacked up and the oil changed
the royal purple looks great actually. still tho, im not sure if im comfortable not changing my oil every 6000miles MAX, and depending on short drives etc u can build up water in the oil.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I have read a few tech articles on another forum about the best flowing oils and oil filters. From what i've read, the purolator filters were one of the best choices next to a specific brand bosch that I cant remember at the moment.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
As far as oil filters, I think my cheap little Moroso filters do just fine. If you can't go with those, go with Wix, but as far as the rest of them, I'll pass. I've had issues with most of the ones that you see in the autoparts stores. Go Moroso, or go home.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
that happened to me the other day on the highway.... i freaked out, i was just cruizing at 60mph and the engine just cut off, no irattic RPM or stumble, just died, tach went to 0 instantly. i glided over to the side and popped the hood. eventually i checked for everything including fuel pressure ( i have a guage on the fuel rail permanently) couldnt figure it out, it would crank but no fire. ended up that one (the gray plug) popped up off the connector on the MSD blaster coil... it musta been up a 1/8" where it wasnt even noticable! i pushed it down and it started right up. maybe thats what happened to u? lol.

customblackbird, Moroso has been making oil filters for a VERY LONG time now. I've been using them because I get them cheap. If you were being sarcastic, well, no one mentioned them but royal purple was mentioned and also K&N, so I thought I would bring up what I replaced those oil filters with.

i only buy factory filters, or napa gold filters. all filters you will get from napa are made by wix, and all the chassis parts are made by dana corporation (people who make the dana series axles).only the best.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I ran the couple different filters on my racing engines and always had pressure issues... when i switched to mobil 1 filter the best thing i noticed other then cleaner oil (less debris when i drained it) was that it would maintain 70 psi at idle and even comming off the track in 110 degree heat it would keep 55-60 psi not bad for running 7000 rpm..... since then i have changed to a remote system with a 2 qt filter setup into an oil cooler for the race car its a napa filter but its made by wix and most of the top super dirt late model guys run the same...now i run nothing but mobil 1 oil and filters in my street cars and again my oil press in my car is never been better!!!
so that all being said best would be:
WIX/NAPA
MOBIL 1
K&N (i seen some modified drivers run them)

Re: oil filters! which is best!
#1 was Purolator Pure one.
#2 was Mobil 1 and K&N same exact filter by the way!
#3 was Wix/Napa gold.
Bosche, fram tough guard and an assortment of other filters was right up there with the WIX.
Now for the problems...Purolator Pureones can is like tinfoil thin and I almost lost a motor due to a rock puncture in one, plus unless you are going to change your oil every 3k you can run into flow issues.
Mobil 1 and K&N both quality filters with thick cans designed to flow well over an extended oil change interval however very noticable difference in how much better the purolator filtered.
Wix/Napa Gold is also a quality filter with a thick can, however did not filter as well as the Mobil or K&N (The difference was about the same as the Mobil/K&N compared to the Purolator Pure One) and it is not synthetic media so flow restrictions could become an issue over time.
The one filter he did not test was Amsoil EAO and after comparing published filtration data the Amsoil appears to filter right on par with the Purolator something like 99.2% @ 20 microns vs Amsoils 98.7 @ 15 microns.
The bad thing about Amsoil filters are they are friggin expensive though $17 a pop at a local auto store who sells amsoil.
The good thing about them is they are rated 25,000 miles and I practice extended oil change intervals in all our daily driver vehicals and change oil once a year using Amsoil SSO oil.
In my Trans Am though I change the oil more often and opted to use Mobil one filter and Mobil 1 oil from Wally World in the 5qt jug.
Bottom line is what is the best filter for one person may not be the best for another, Example, if you change your oil every 3k would you want to use a $17 Amsoil filter? Probably not! If you are looking at doing Extended oil change intervals of 10k or more would you want to use a Purolator Pure one? Probably not!
If you are a cronic oil changer and change your synthetic oil after 3,000 miles then the truth is just about any oil filter will serve you well, it has already been proven by used oil analysis that the oil filter plays very little roll in the end condition of the oil when a sample was taken...your air filter is a whole different story though and plays a huge roll in letting contaminants into the oil in the first place. If you want cleaner oil, use a better air filter, Not K&N, Spectre HPR, ECT, but get a quality paper filter!

Taken directly from their website.
http://www.moroso.com/catalog/catego...?catcode=20002
Yeah, it's nothing flashy and it doesn't come in a fancy package, but I honestly believe that it is the best filter. Use one, cut it open and see all the little stuff it captures. I'm not a big fan of STP, Fram, or Bosch, but you could sucker me into a K&N. I like the morosos, and the best thing about them, when you get the 2 quart capacity oil filters, and it sticks out too low, and you bottom your car out at Wendy's on their stupid and useless speedbumps, you only scratch and dent it, it doesn't break open! It is a tough filter.

I just bought one of those new style filters for my girls ecotec cobalt. I went through the packages thinking someone played a joke a cut it open and left only the filter inside.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
no but that reminds me of a mercedes oil filter... its just like that, u plug it into the engine by screwing a cap off... and on it is a long plastic shaft with orings... u cant mess the orings up or the pressure is all messed up.
the filter support looks like an Ecore and is poopy.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
You could probably order them from Jegs or Summit. My Uncle has a performance shop and I know he orders his from VSI but you have to set up an account with them and there is a minimum order through them. My cost comes out to less than the K&N's at Autozone.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
Plain Jane Orange Frams since 1984 including '84 TA I bought used, '90 TA I bought brand new 20 years ago, and Honda Civic I bought brand new 17 years ago. Have had no engine problems and all are still running strong.
Recently started using the upgraded Frams and full synthetic oil in all vehicles.
Class action lawsuits would quickly shut down any company whose filters were destroying expensive engines (huge attorneys' fees to be made).
