Has anyone used the Holley Commander 950 on a GM 1st gen small block? I have an L98 that was pulled out of a 91 GTA and I'd like to turn it into a 383. However, I don't want to use my existing TPI. I looked into the MiniRam, but the whole set up is so freaking expensive. Pretty much over 4k when your all said and done. The Commander 950 seems like a worthy alternative, however I have heard some people say that the ECU is kinda primitive. Also what size injectors would be good for this size motor?
Are you referring to the Holley Stealth Ram Intake? or the Holley Commander 950 DFI system?
You can buy both together, but that is a chunk of change.
You can run the Holley Stealth Ram intake to replace the TPI on your current engine or even a 383. You will need to burn a custom chip, or have someone burn you a custom chip though to provide the appropriate fueling and spark etc.
The Commander 950 setup can be used w/ any intake you chose to use with it.
My car was an original 305 TPI car that I first converted to a 355 w/ the factory TPI. I then installed the HSR and tuned the factory '165 ecm to run it right. I just last night finished my Holley Commander 950 DFI install and got the car running. The ecm is great, and the tuning is very simple to do. And trust me it's not as primitive as the factory ECM. You can tune the C950 on the fly etc. You can also tune the factory compter on the fly w/ the Moates Ostrich setup...
It really depends on your goals for what you need. And it also depend on whether you are referring to just an intake swap, or an intake and fuel management system swap.

Does the HSR come with the fuel rails, injectors, and ECM, or is it just the intake? Can you use the stock fuel rails and injectors with the HSR. I think the 950 comes with all of the above, including a new intake and TB. I like the idea of being able to tune on the fly and not having to deal with the trouble of burning a new PROM, since I don't have the equipment to do so. I want to have a completely new fuel injection system instead of my stock set up. The stock set up is in the car now (obviously) and I want to be able to build the motor without having to take parts off the car. That way, once I get the motor built up I can just take the old motor out and drop the new motor in, with a completely new ECM. Also, will the HSR fit under the hood of my 87 Trans Am?
HSR will fit under stock hood of your TA - WITH MODIFICATIONS. I had to cut out the cross bracing for it to fit mine, but it fits just fine w/o the bracing.
The HSR kit you can buy will get you the intake base, the intake plenum, fuel rails etc. You will need to make new fuel lines from the factory lines on the driver's side inner fender to the new fuel rails, get new injectors etc. Your original throttle body will work fine on the HSR.
You will need to burn chips to really see benefit from the HSR, and also so that you don't blow up your motor w/ the HSR on it. It is MUCH cheaper to burn chips than it is to get something like the Commander 950.
I did my HSR swap for around $500-600 IIRC... It's been a while, but that includes the entire swap parts needed. (Do a search and you can find ALL that you need for the HSR to bolt into your car). I already had injectors etc though...
