Back in the game! Bought a thirdgen
After 6 months of searching I found a camaro with every option I wanted. Its an 86 iroc with saddle interior. A new GM 350 crate engine was just put in along with a new darkhorse T5. It comes with SFC's(not installed yet) and a few other goodies. I'm flying to VA in early august to pick it up and drive it back to TX. All for $3850! I'm so happy. The mod list is ready.

I hope you went to VA to see it in person before you bought it. I bought my Firebird sight-unseen. Definitely the last time I'll ever do that.

I agree with above sounds like a good deal, but that car is in a state known to produce rust, I would have thoroughly looked undercarriage and lower body panels. Either way its yours now hope you enjoy your new ride. Happy modding.

Actually its not paided for yet. He's been real honest with me from what I can tell through about 25 emails back and forth. He said the rear quarter on the drivers side has a couple of small bubbles in the paint, but otherwise its rust free. What other places should I check besides the quarters, floorboards and around the front and rear window seals?

Looks ok but hopefully it's my eyes that are playing tricks on me.One is that it looks like he wet the car to give it a shiney paint, some spots on the ground efx looks like where the water is drying off.2nd the driver's side mirror is faded pink down the middle because the clear is peeled off, also up the a pillar, next to the mirror is peeled.3rd the carpet looks like it had gotten wet from leaky T-tops,seat rails rusted too.If you have photoshop or some program that resizes pictures do that and you'll see what I'm talking about. Other than that looks like a decent deal for what you are going to pay, maybe talk the price down some though.

i wouldnt pay $3850 for that, its not worth it. if he sold it locally he might get $1500 for it. i agree with he wet the paint to make it look shiney. i wouldnt pay him a dime till u see the car, then im still sayin its not worth that..though i dont doubt he has that much into the car...cars suck all your money, u will never get it back out, so he needs to go down on the price, cause weather it has a brand new motor or a newly rebuilt its still in a 17 year old car. also it looks like the inspection says 2/03 so its expried and there is probably a reason he didnt get it inspected. (emissions, brakes, or other problems) Though everything i think could be wrong and it could be a nice car, but i would never pay $3850 for it, my 4th gen i got looks much nicer, though im sure its not as close to as fast, but hey the speed limit around here is 60 at hte fastest..so why do i need to go fast? I paid $2300 for my 4th gen and its very nice for what i paid

Geez you guys act like he's trying to rip me off. I know it needs new paint, that was one of the first things he told me that the paint was original and faded. Its all original except for the engine and trans. I know the whole interior needs replaced thats in my plans. In the next two years I plan to dump about 6K into it so little things like carpet don't matter. I'm putting in a full leather interior, new paint, 355 with miniram, etc. Its going to be all show and go.

u definally need to get some va papers, or even look on autotrader and get a idea of what they go for around here. that might be a good price in tx, but in va he IS ripping u off.

$1500 I've been looking on autotrader, ebay motors, collectorcartrader.com for the last 6 months and $1500 thirdgen's are trash. I think I got a great deal on the car pending looking at it in person. I'm not going to give him a dime until I drive it and inspect it. I appreciate the concern, but so far just about every post has been negative. I'm a grown man and can spot things. I'm not going to get ripped off. I'm going to finally have the thirdgen I have wanted for a long time so show me some happiness here please. Its going to take a lot of money, but when I get done I promise it will be one of the nicest around.

I found one car on autotrader within 300 miles of richmond that was the same quality of the car I'm getting for $3800. It had a 305 and automatic which I don't want. The car I'm buying as a brand new crate 350 and T5. Plus its the exact color scheme I want. I'm extremely happy for the price. It was either this or a $15,000 66/67 chevelle. I wanted performance in the twisties though.

yes u have had negitive opinions, and u did not ask for anyone opinions, but if u post usually u get people opinions, some good some bad. not everyone thinks the same as u. i dont see that car as a great deal for the price, but thats just me, u might and if u do then spend the money. but look at zephers new car a 88 formula, he paid $1700 and i think his car is in better condition, though it doesnt have the new motor or anything

I know I'll get negative opinions but damn! You guys were dragging me down. I think its a good purchase and thats good enough for me. Like I said I've been searching 6 months for this car. I can't find a red/beige 350/5speed ANYWHERE until now and its finally mine. Money isn't an issue here, and I'm not going to hold out for some $1500 car. $3850 is the cheapest I've ever paided for a car in my life. This will be my third thirdgen so I know them quite well. I can't wait to get the new leather interior in, full professional paint(dad owns a paint shop) and 400+hp 355. Its gonna be so much fun!

Sorry for my comments but I didn't know or see the full story of what the owner told you or what you knew about the car.$3850 is an "ok" price for what it has/is though.Take care and good luck on the long trip to and back.

What part of VA? is it 1 hour north, east, west, south of Richmond? If it's close to me, I'll cruise over and take a look at it and see how well it drives.

Thanks Zepher, but its 1 hour west of richmond, so about 3 hours west of you. If I don't want the car I'll just get a flight back, no harm. I have a feeling I'll take it though. I have to drive him back to his house so its going to get an hour test drive before any money changes hands. This roadtrip is going to be so much fun! T-Tops off the whole way to TX

Damn... it sucks that the car you always want is usually far away... but if you are willing to fly, more power to ya.
My only suggestions, if you plan on putting 6 grand into it why not just get a 305 car with an auto and make that part of the 6 grand..
But I totaly understand where you are coming from, I am putting way more money into my car then it is worth.
My only gripe, I have heard bad things about a T5 with a 350.

Well, one thing I would check is the fact that the car originally had a 305 in it. That's why you had trouble finding a 350/5-speed car.....
Anyway, check to see if he did the right stuff to swap in the motor (injectors, new PROM, etc)
BTW, even for all that, 3850 is expensive for a car that needs new interior, paint, and possibly motor work to get it running to its potential. I paid 2500 for my 86 T/A and the paint was awesome on it, interior was mint w/ the exception of the headliner, no t-top leaks. Car had 2 adult owners and was taken care of. AND, I bought it in Port Acres, TX.
Good cars are out there, you just gotta keep an eye out for them
BTW, here is a pic of my car the day I got it (it was filthy though, damn road construction)

i must have just gotten lucky. i got my iroc liek 40 miles from me. had rims on it, interior was good (not mint.. but it didnt have any wear) was adult owned and i got it for $1000. the catch, it didnt pass emissions. so i spent $100 on a new cat and it was fine. so like 86WS6_T/A said.. they r out there.. jsut keep looking, cause most arent in the paper.. just on the side of the road with a for sale sign (like mine, was going to the mall, got turned around, went thru an apartment complex and there is was )

Its all good guys. I'm tired of searching and am ready to get a thirdgen. I'm extremely happy with this find. It gives me a solid foundation to work from with the parts I want. 4bolt main 350, new T5 from darkhorse, comes with SFC's(not installed), extra original parts, etc. Sure there may be one out there with the same parts/condition for $1500 but I'll never find it. I've searched every day for 6 months and I'm tired of searching. There's not much that will make me turn away from this car unless its completely eaten up with rust. I trust the guy that owns this car because I feel like he's been honest with me from the beginning. He's answered every question I've had plus some.
Besides its $853 to fly back that same day from richmond. I can do a lot of mods/fixin for that much $$ Wish me luck on the road trip!

Good luck and have a great road trip. Sounds like the money isn't as much an issue for you as it is for some of us. I think thats the main reason for the "keep looking" comments. After plane flight and gas back your probably looking at more like 4500. To me thats to much for that car buts thats because I don't have 4500 burning a hole in my pocket. I am sure you will have much fun with your new ride. A road trip is a great way to kick it off. Enjoy. I am sure we will be seeing one hell uv a nice camaro come out of all this.

I just searched AT and ebaymotors again and found nothing that interested me. Like I said earlier this is the least amount of money I've ever spent on a car so I'm not expecting it to be perfect, far from actually. I did find a yellow one in VA for $3500 with tan interior, 305, 700r4. I'm waiting on the story of it right now.

I've decided to buy an 87 GTA hard top rolling chassis with subframes and road racing suspension.
chassis setup is worth it by itself, so as soon as I sell off some parts from my 86 as well as the 86 itself, I'll put the LT1 setup into the 87.
Getting it for $1000, which I think is a good price.

Body is perfect, just needs paint.
It has strange options.
Hardtop, digital dash, power windows, manual locks, 9bolt with 3.45 gears, tan cloth interior.

what color is it currently.
Options dont seem too odd. I think JIM85IROC has the same thing. I assume originally a 305 / 5spd car.
The power windows, manual locks is odd though

It is a maroon color.
I don't recall the original engine tranny combo, but it did have a MiniRam on top of a sbc406. The guy traded the motor and tranny for an Rx7 so that is why it's a rolling chassis.

Unless it is not stock. The 3.45 rear usually denotes 305 spd.
Sounds like a good deal. Suspension components are not cheap. If it is all good quality stuff it is likely a smokin deal for a grand.

I'll swing by there tomorrow and take some pictures of it and find out what it has and what engine/tranny it came with.
The subframe connectors are hidden in the car. The owner did that so that he could race in SCCA races in the stock class.
I'll take pics of those as well.
