clearcoat on rims

ok i saw the tech article on stripping the clear coat off the iroc rims and i this may be dumb but i can do that to the rims on the stock rims of a 92 rs camaro cant i...becuz recently the clearcoat has been coming off slowly and it looks like crap...so can i strip the clear coat and polish them just like the tech article

My wheels were dull, not really chipped or peeled. Took a brillo steel wool pad and cleaned the heck out of them, washed off good and recoated them with clear laquer. Turned out pretty darn good, almost factory new looking.
