Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

I want to dress up my engine in my 84' Camaro z28 and make it presentable. So what are some of my options? Valve covers and air filter? new wires and cables? Is this the direction I should go in to start? Also don't mind that the engine is dirty I plan to clean it up nice this weekend. Wasn't sure where to post this, if it needs to be moved please do.

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

Looks fine to me.

Forget the chrome. Bling is a total waste of money, and has a tendency to lead to problems you can't foresee.

It needs a trip to the quarter care wash with a stop along the way at VatoZone or something for about 3 cans of Gunk Engine Bright, or the same thing (diesel fuel in a spray can) in the store brand.

Does look like the plug wires are kind of deteriorated though, besides just overall being utt bucking fugly in general. I'd suggest a set of these.

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

Nice engine i have an 84 z28 L69 H.O. I just got done cleaning up my engine bay.I would take off the air cleaner housing and clean all the dirt off and then put a coat of wax on it i did that to mine and it looks a 100 times better. you can also just get some regular cleaner that is safe on paint and just clean out all the dirt you will be suprised how good it can look with a good cleaning. if you would rather not keep the stock look summit sells a couple really nice engine dress up kits for the 305. this one is my favorite because it isnt alot of bling but still makes it look nice.

Deffinitely get rid of that snorkel style air cleaner. Just get an open element. Your engine will be happier since it can breath easier. And don't knock me by saying it brings in cold air. The cool air has to travel through that hot passage and then through that itty bitty section where the flexible tube connects to the main housing.

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

since it has the single snorkel air cleaner I believe that makes that motor the LG4 not the L69, so it wouldn't be a 305HO IIRC

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

Well I found some kits online from $50-150 for chrome valve covers, air filter, and other misc. stuff. I think i'll go with one of those. And yea it is the LG4, thought it was the HO when I bought it and haven't changed my profile.

You must decide which route you want to go (chrome or polished alum.) then start looking at the usual sites (jegs, summit, street and performance, etc) there are loads of covers and caps you can put on your car. It is just a matter of personnel taste.

First, give the engine bay the mother of all cleaning's

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

If you have no plans to modify the engine as far as power/emissions are concerned, then I would do as everyone is suggesting and clean the engine for all it's worth, and then maybe renew the rubber hoses and paint/powder coat the air cleaner back to black. Replace the coolant and washer bottles with new items (makes a huge difference), and then leave it at that. It looks like the engine is pretty much stock, and that's a rarity these days.

I would even consider replacing the ignition leads with some understated ones, as they do appear to stick out in yellow.

some good cleaning and re-routing and cleaning up of wires and wire loom, plus any bling would do wonders

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

Nothing looks worse than tossing a few shiny chrome things into an otherwise nasty engine bay. As others have said, cleaning will help. I'd also suggest removing as much stuff as you can, and giving it a fresh coat of paint. Repaint the valve covers, all the brackets, pullies, etc. Replace all of the loom tubing on your wiring harness with new (BLACK) stuff. Replace the fluid bottles with new ones. If you get an open element air cleaner, paint it a nice semigloss black or maybe silver, and paint your valve covers the same color. That'll tie them in nicely without adding a bunch of out of place chrome.

Don't buy cheapo valve covers. You'll just end up with a ton of leaks when they flex and warp.

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

Planning a scheme from the begbinning is important. Years ago I added some chrome Valve covers to mine but they never seemed to fit the TPI setup (it being aluminum colored. so instead this past winter I went to the local pick and Pull yard and got some covers off a chev truck engine, stripped them and had them powdercoated. (I used to work in a powdercoating shop so It was free) I coated the covers in a two part starting with a metalic silver and then a color called black chrome. It's a transparent black that give the covers a look of a smoked silver. I also took the upper plenum and runners off and painted them in a textured graphite metalic.
I also painted my yellowing washer and coolant bottles with Krylon Fusion paint in Satin white.
Overall the engine bay will be different shades of blacks and greys, accented with some red (ignition lines and wire looms).
I'm also planning to build plastic covers for both my battery and charcol tank.

Re: Want to dress up my engine......(pics)

Just valve covers and an open element air filter and I dont think this looks bad at all...

I plan on getting some nicer valve covers for my new 350, though.
