tips for keeping that pristine 3d gen body!

Anyone else as **** retentive as I am with my 3d gen convertible? It's my summer daily driver, freshly painted this spring with 7500 miles on it since. Other than bugs on the nose, it is still straight and ding-free, thanks to this level of paranoia:

- In the parking lot at work, I always park on the end of a row, with the rest of the cars to my left. I figure most people drive to work alone, so there's less danger of someone opening a passenger door into mine.

- I park away from the grocery store end of the shopping center, to avoid rogue shopping carts and inconsiderate people with wide-swinging doors. The walk is worth it.

- I have tires blocks on the floor in my garage to prevent me from touching the front wall when I pull in.

- I back way off when I'm following dump trucks!

- I never stop to chat with anyone who's walking their dog - the dog always wants to jump up on your door to lick your face.

Anyone else have tips they use to prevent unneeded damage?

I do those exact same things! and more!

When working on my car and have to move the car back a bit, I will push it by rotating the tyres and not by starting it for a few seconds.

I keep a good distance between the car in front of me, to avoid rocks flying up from their tyres, and I curse anyone who cuts in front of me by a few feet.

I wash my car with purified water, and then chamios by gliding it across the paint without any pressure on it.

I always turn the car off in drive, and then put it into neutral then use the Ebrake. I never let it rest in park without the ebrake on first!

Always make sure the last drop goes into the gas tank and not on my car. Obviously never leaning on the car either.

I close the doors with the window down a touch, so that it is barely up against the rubbers. This saves the rubbers from flattening out, and also saves the glass from a lot of stress and rattling later on.

I dont leave the doors open for a long time, cause we all know how these door hinges have a hard time as it is.

I close the bonnet with two flat palms on the edge of the hood, to not dent it.

Avoid bumpy or damaged roads. Also avoid people watering systems and ground water.

The biggest threat to your car is other people! Always remember that.

There's many more that I cant think of right now..

While we're all talking about paranoid situations. In grocery stores and hardwares stores, park as far away, and at the highest elevation (cause gravity brings in those stray carts).

That was the one I was gonna say: I park at the highest point in a parking lot, or at least near a cement island to protect from runaway carts. (Also protects if the parking lot is prone to flooding like one of my old job's parking lot was) And preferably park on the passenger side of other cars for reasons already stated.

-I close the hood by gripping from underneath and letting it drop the last few inches to close all the way to keep fingerprints off and keep from denting anything.

-I close the hatch by pulling it down by the catch, and pull it down slowly to keep the lift seals from blowing, then set it down gently on the latch (slamming it breaks all the fragile plastic parts that the pulldown motor is made of) and let the motor pull it down the rest of the way.

-I don't let anyone lean on the door when it's open, or on the car at all at any time.

-I use a fender cover when I work on the motor.

-After I wash the car, I blow out the pockets where the turn signals reside so water doesn't sit there (us late thirdgen Camaro guys have condensation problems is the lenses, and yes, I did notch the fascia per the TSB, but it still does it)

The first thing I noticed when I switched to 275 tires was that rocks were flung from the ground hitting the sides of the car. Since then, I've been considering mudflaps (as much as I detest the idea, it's either that or rockchips...) I hate the idea of mudflaps so much though I still haven't done it. Sometimes, you just can't win!

Jza,

Regarding the turn signal lamp modification. I too made the modification and with one exception, the lamps have remaind condensation free. The exception was yesterday when it was raining so hard that people were pulling off the road to wait it out - visibility was 20-30 feet at parts. There was a 20 foot section I had to traverse water about a foot high. This is probably where water entered.

One thing I did in addition to the tech article was put a bead of silicone around the front lens to seal it to the black holder. I also filled in with silicone the large opening that is in the lower middle portion of this assembly. It seems like this would be an easy place for water to enter, even if it's in the open.

Good/interesting suggestions for keeping the car from being damaged.

How about guys that park at an angle taking up two parking spaces to keep people from parking next to their "gem"? I would imagine that that would make someone mad (because you took up an additional parking space) enough to key it...

I guess it would be ridiculous to mention not to follow too close to salt trucks spreading salt... but I wonder if/how you keep leaves from falling on the car during the autumn? Falling acornes? Birds leaving their "calling card" on the car?

I had a friend that got a new car, and he'd always check for dings when he returned to the car. If he spotted a new ding, he'd look at the car parked next to his and if the offending dent/color matched the swing of that door, he would let the air out of two tires. Two tires because that would inconvience the owner enough where he'd have to get help rather than just putting on the spare. He would only let the air out so as not to cause any permanent damage (nice guy, uh?).

Once he was croutching letting the air out of some guy's car when out of a mall some teenagers began approaching. They stopped about 100 feet from the car and were all talking amongst themselves pointing at him. He quickly left. I think he stopped after that.

He too parked at the far end of the parking lot, and inevitably, there'd often be some joker parked next to him even with empty spaces all around. Go figure.

Stuart: Well, the modification did help. I doesn't do it anymore on any humid day like it used to. But when it rains heavily it does. I'm not gonna worry too much about it because I'm going to replace them (again) soon. The last time the car was in the body shop they cracked both lenses (which were brand new!)

My car has to sit outside my parents garage, so I got twice as much work keeping it clean.

1. If you have a cat and park in the garage, put the hood up so the cat wont find a warm spot on your hood.

2. Dont use towels that have sat on the ground, they may pic up a rock, so when you are drying you are scratching the **** out of your car.

3. If you are in a big parking lot, park between two spots, thus making a huge parking spot.

4. Meguirs Quick detailer spray will disolve bird ****. Its amazing, but dont rub it because birds swallow gravel and sand to help digest food.

I have more, but I don't relize they are **** retentive till someone points it out. I might have more later.

Crazy seth's tips for keeping up the white trash rep unfairly given to 3rd gens:

Pull all the way up in the parking spot, until you hear your front spoiler begin to crack, then ease it in just a little further.

If its broke dont fix it.

If its broke and it impeeds the car's being able to move, jimmy-rig something to work.

Paint just weighs the car down, you dont really need it. Paint chips and flakes are performance modifications.

stay tuned for more next episode.

well i wash my car almost 7 times a week, and i cant wash my car at my house (hard water from the well) so i go to the dollar car wash or at work (car dealership) i never run it thru the machine i always hand wash it. i will use the mit once maybe twice a week otherwise i just power wash it. i try and use the air compressor to blow out all the water in the cracks and it usually blows off the water thats beads up.

and i never park near anyone, my greatest fear is rock chips, i have them on the front from driving the highway into town.

and my nephew, he is 2. he will touch anything he sees and i park in the garage so he tries to touch my car but my mom is good about keeping him away when he is over.

i have one door ding, its from my step-dad. he doesnt care about me or my car or anything, and my mom parked a lil close one day and he opened her door into my car to put the baby seat in. what an A-hole. it didnt dent it, just chipped the paint under the handle about 1/16" i will fix it at work some day.

but otherwise, i dont park near anyone, no one leans on my car, and i never have sexual actions on or in my car anymore. lol.

and rocks from large tires. i hate that too.

have fun and keep clean guys

I paid $2000.00 for paint and body work so really HATE rocks. I have thought of getting a bra but on a Black car. I don't know. Therefore i don't drive behind trucks or anyone else for that matter on the highway. I just hit the overdrive and leave them.

Park far away in the lots. My 13 year old son uses the time to put the cart away as pre drivers ed. He has probably run into your car if you are not parked far away because he can not drive a shopping cart much less a car.

My car is a no smoking, eating and limited drinking car. This policy cuts down on a lot of problems.

I will ride my kid to football and baseball practice but I have my wife pick him up. After all she has the SUV that is designed for this sort of transportation. I love my kid but I don't need or want the mud and dirt.

Wash your car often by hand. Know every inch of your car.

Only use real chamois or cotton towels to dry.

Never use the car washes that have brushes.

Buffing often is a good thing.

Don't park under trees. When the big rain storms come and the branch crashes through your T Tops, just remember I told you so.

Don't park by kids under the age of 12. They throw rocks and eggs at cars and then they run. They also crash their bikes into your car. My son also explained to me why I never could keep the chrome valve stem caps on my wheels. The kids go on "chromie" raids and steal them off of cars with chrome wheels for their bikes. Now my alarm is set Super sensetive.

Just remember it is always the other guy(or his kids) that is jealous and a hater of your nice car.

My car is broken so often that it never leaves the garage. :/

Bittersweet situation I suppose.

BTW, I NEVER take up 2 parking spots. That's an invitation to get keyed.

I forgot another one. I too struggle between hating mudflaps but hating rock dings in the rear quarters. I compromised. I bought mud flaps, just plain black ones. Rather than installing them with screws or bolts that would be permanent and an invitation to rust, I put them on with those black spring clips you can buy at Staples or OfficeMax. You know, you squeeze the clip to open it. It fits right on the wheel well (you may have to trim the mudflap just a bit). I then remove the chrome part so you don't even see the black clip at all. When you wash the car, just unclip them. I've been using these for two months now, I haven't lost a clip or mudflap yet.

It gets worse: with my 67 convertible, which is a true show car, I didn't even want the black mud flaps. So I took clear plexiglas and cut it to the shape of the mud flap. I hold these on with the same black clips (using foam to protect the chrome wheel opening moldings). Believe it or not, most people don't notice them at all. I thought I would take them off at cruise nights and shows but I don't even bother any more.

And finally: my two children, ages 10 and 8, have been around my cars so much that they are very well-trained. When my daughter gets out of the back seat of my convertibles, she straightens out the seat belts first. When they close the doors, they make sure to push on the door handle, not the window or door skin. I got them started young, getting them to do the vacuuming (starting on the daily drivers first) by letting them keep the change they found under the seats.

The rules on eating and drinking are severely limited. My best friend and my Mother are the only ones I really trust not to spill anything in my car. H$ll, I already have a mojor stain that came with the car, I don't need any help making it bigger.

There is no smoking in my car. You ask to smoke in my vehicle you will be walking. (I have no problem with people who smoke......they just wont be doing it in my car)

There is no leaning on the car, you will promptly have a shoe thrown at you (I'v done it before).

There is no sitting on the hatchback (I have a friend who's had people do that O_o!) yeah, I really want my spoiler ripped off. There is no RIDING in the hatchback.

I park very close to the middle of nowhere, and I tend to glare at people who have the nerve to get near my car when I've taken the trouble of parking so far out.

I move my car if my friend's little brother is playing soccer with his friend. I inspect my car when I come back.

I tell the shop to be excessively careful with my car. It came back with a dent last time....needless to say, the people at the dealership were just as unhappy as I was when I got through with them.

To avoid a crash, I tell people that if there is any screaming or yelling, the car will immediately be pulled over and a lecture will ensue.

I try to dogde anything that might fly up and scratch or dent my car, and I drive very slowly if there is a patch of gravel that just can't be missed.

And there are most deffinitely no sexual activities going on in my car. ^_^

Well, I think that's about it. ^_^

I lost interest of trying to keep my car looking nice after it got hit by a shopping cart a week after it was painted. One thing I'm glad about though is, I don't have an electric pull down for the hatch :hail: Never have to worry about having some pos bit of plastic breaking on me.

glad to see im mostly normal .. I always park way in the back lot, but even thats no guarentee.. the other day some bitty parked in the back 40, and then decided she didnt want to bring her cart back to the "cart corral". Grrr. At least I was in my car driving away at this point, so nothing happened, but it irked me.

Also, a lot of buffing is not necessarily a good thing. When I get home, Ill get some pics together of what a previous owner did to my car by buffing the **** out of it all the time. UGLY. Clear coat is gone on some spots on the roof and the deck lid. I have been working on all the tiny spots driving me nuts, and Im still this ****. Its going to be really bad when I get my new paint (hopefully next year). My own husband (who knows all about the hatch motor issues) slammed my hatch the other day. oooo. I coulda killed him then (but i got over it, you know, that whole love thing and all). And some dufus at work that needed a jump (for some stupid reason he always HAS to ask me, cuz i got the big V8 ) and proceeds to slam my hood down. I was pissed. I always set my hood down and try to put as little pressure on it as possible. Some people.

I guess Im just obsessed b/c this is the car Ive wanted since I was 14, and I will die happy with my third gen.
